Could someone please let me know what the solicitor's fees are for purchasing a property. The agent told me it's 1% of the property price !!I nearly flipped !That's daylight robbery !!!
Is this true ?

I pay between 6 to 15k depending on the value of the property. The 6k was for a 1.7 mill flat and the 15k was for a 7.5 mill flat

I never heard of that, although I have only ever bought 1 property.
I used Woo Kwan Lee & Lo in 2004/2005.
They had a breakdown of the costs, it was never related to the property price. I think it came to under $6,000 for the legal costs.

general advice re this for a 'normal' flat (i.e. between 1 to 15m) would be 6k for a cheap one, 8-10k for a mid-range one and 10-15k for a top end one
this is all assuming the purchase is a regular one that does not need anything special (e.g. special checks, etc)

I use Rowdget W. Young, 3/F Wings Building between the escaltor and Wing Lung Bank on Queen's Road Central. It's about 8,000-10,000.

I understand that your lawyer is supposed to read the property title in detail and look for anything that may cause you trouble or legal liability in the future. This is because the seller is selling you the property as is. For some older building, the owner has change the floor plan and create some extra space. That could cost you money and trouble. For a new building, that is very simple to check the title.
I always look at the quality before pricing. I know some lawyer take on $4K with the assumption that everything okay and may not even look at the title. Afterall the lawyer plan to retire in 5 years. For as long as nothing happen in the next few years, he is happy with your $4K and go. I always take an extra step with it comes to legal and liability.
Just my 2 cents advise.
