If you had HKD100,000 in hand right now and didn't mind locking it away for a few years if need be, how would you invest it?

Gold is a good choice. There are so many reasons, but if you need convincing i suggest you at the "goldsilver" website.

Emerging markets shares. I'd put it in a tracker fund for one or more of the key Asian indices, like the HSI ETF listed here in HK. Wouldn't bother with picking individual stocks, unless you're really into it and prepared to do the research and manage it periodically. Also wouldn't bother with mutual funds - waste of money. Tracker funds are cheap and the most accurate way of tracking the performance of an index.

I prefer real assets.
Silver is a good investment, better than Gold.
In 2010 it went up 60% compared to Gold's 20%
The ratio between the two is decreasing, Silver can be used as a vehicle to swap for Gold at a later stage.
Just do some basic research on Silver investing, you'd be surprised.

You can buy 2800 HK through your local HSBC website. Its a breeze and have invested myself through this avenue.
Another ETF to consider is3073 HK, Greater China ETF, where you invest in the Taiwan, HK and China market indices.

Do you know where to buy silver coins & bars in hk?
Its easy to buy gold bars from banks but silver seems unavailable.
I prefer the real thing to paper gold or silver.

They have all 4 precious metals in bars and coins, reasonable premiums over spot.

China. Still going to grow fast in the next couple of years. If buying an index tracker fund, I would prefer those tracking China A shares instead of the HSI or other Asian markets.
