Advice on Landlord duties

Hi,

My toilet is backing up in the worst possible way to the shower. The landlord says that this has never happened before, and I am paying for the blockage to be removed. Fair enough, I think.

However, plumber came in and said that the shower drain should not be connected to the sewer line directly (not even a foot from where it exits the raised shower floor, there is a joint to the sewer line under the toilet - all visible).

What should my landlord do? Is this really a code violation on building code? I really haven't the slightest clue on where to begin verifying versus code and what duties of my landlord are.
