Changing color of hardwood floor

Hi,

We just bought an apartment that comes with a very dark brown hardwood floor.

Has anyone ever tried to hire a contractor to have the floor polished so that it can be restained to a lighter color? how is the result and how much did it cost you? Our place is roughlly 1,500 sqft.

I heard that some polishing/restaining jobs ended up in disaster, uneven floor, uneven colorings, dust in all possible corners of the apartment, restaining WITH the dust that end up not holding and having granular feeling etc...

Any advice/experience shares would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

Depending on the wood, if it is naturally a solid dark wood it is highly unlikely to become any lighter, the only way would be to replace the flooring to a lighter colour or tile, this could prove to be expensive though, just had a quote for a solid teak floor to be laid nice and light teak(not a laminated floor) HK$79 per sq ft supplied and fitted. but my apartment is half the size of yours (700sqft) and the cost was around 55K
