Park Island Clubs...

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

My partner and I are moving to HK in july, at the moment we like the sound of Park Island/Ma Wan, however we've also been told that you have to join a club there in order to enter some of the restaurants/cafe's/gym's, we were also told that it can cost a lot to join! We've been trying to find info on club membership prices but havent heard from anyone yet, and the website is in chinese (which i cant read). Is there anyone living on the island or anyone who knows what the truth is?

No, you don't have to pay to join the club if you are residents of Park Island (the private housing estate). This does not apply to those village houses at the back. They have 2 club houses for the time being, and a 3rd one will open soon. You need to have resident cards to gain access into those clubhouses. There are facilities like outdoor and indoor swimming pools, tennis, badminton, basketball, rockclimbing, squash, table-tennis, bowling, workout gyms, hot and cold tubs, BBQ, personal cinema, minature golf etc. There's a beach nearby, good place for sunbathing. Restaurants are located outside near the pier and are open to public.

You have to take into consideration the location of your workplace as well. They have ferries to Central (HK Island) and Tsuen Wan, shuttle buses to Kwai Fong and Tsing Yi. It can be inconvenient to certain places though. It seems that there are more foreigners living on the island than before (only from my observation, correct me if I'm wrong).

We'll be teaching drama and our workplace isn't assigned yet, most likely to be somewhere on Kowloon, the company will try and give us students/schools near where we live. Apparantly other teachers live out near discovery bay/tung chung and they havent complained too much about commuting so far! I've been wondering why it doesn't seem to be as popular as other locations, is it just that it's further out?

No, PI is actually closer than DB and TC. The reason that DB is more popular is because it's been there for quite some years, famous for its relaxed environment, and gathered a lot of expats. Whereas for TC, it's because of its convenience and distance to the airport, a lot of crew members live there. PI has a shuttle service to Kwai Fong subway station, about 15-20 mins ride. The oldest blocks in PI are less than 5 years old, and the newest blocks are still available for sale (may be from 2nd hand market, but they are new).

I've heard a few conflicting things about PI acutally, one that it has a lot of locals and another that it's over-run with expats! The main thing people have cautioned me about (apart from finding out about possible fees for the clubs) is the commuting and the quiet. If quietness is the worst it has then that's totally fine. Quiet is good! I assume I'll be out a fair bit in the city so coming home to quiet would be lovely. I still want to look at other areas, but so far, PI sounds good. Thanks for your help, very much appreciated!

There are more locals than expats in PI up till now. The creatures that over-run are dogs! If you are afraid of dogs, then don't choose PI.

You don't need to pay to join any clubs if you are a resident. There are small charges such as HK$10 to use to the pool or if you want to bring a non-resident into the club house. You will get a resident's card if you rent or buy. The ferries are cheaper and more frequent to HK than Discovery Bay and the facilities and management are much better. The downside for expats is that it doesn't have an expat community (if you like that kind of thing) like DB and there are few shops and restaurants - though there is a Park'n'Shop. DB has an excellent plaza with many more things to do. However, if you want a quality flat and top-notch facilities (there is a Banyan Tree spa which you need to pay for) on HK's doorstep then PI is for you.

I'm not too concerned about restaurants, when we wanna go out we can just go to HK Island or Kowloon, for somewhere to live we really just want a good quality place at a reasonable price. From what I've seen so far PI looks really nice, good open view, beaches, walking trails and facilities. And a spa! Definately have to check that out!
