Advice on living in Chai Wan

We're considering Chai Wan as one of the possibilities to rent an apt. Would appreciate any advice and comments about living in Chai Wan, preferrably aroudn the MTR station. Would also appreciate any leads on an apt around 1200 sqft offered for lease directly by the owner. Many thanks. in advance.

I live in Siu Sai Wan (a stone throw away from Chai Wan) in Isladn Resort.

It is a muti-tower resident complex with all the amentities you can think of including a shopping mall with ParknShop downstairs.

We live in 1223 sq ft apt (38th floor) and pay 28K per month for rent (270degree sea view, maid room, 3 beds/2 baths).

We dont really use public transportation but Island Resort is on top of a big bus stop and there are many buses and mini buses that go to Central and other areas of HK island as well as MTR stops. There is a mini bus that goes to Heng Fa Cheun station which takes about 5 mins from the complex.

Thanks, poiuy, for the information. How do you like living in Chai Wan? Yours sounds about what we're looking for.

you might want to look at Heng Fa Villa, beside Heng Fa Chuen...private pool, large sea view apts...5 mins walk to Heng Fa Chuen station

Aside from Island Resort (sea view but not close to MTR), Bayview Park is the only other newer building, 5 mins walk to Chai Wan MTR...they do have 1400ft duplex penthouses..

We like living in Siu Sai Wan. Although, Chai Wan is just around the corner, I am embarrased to say I have never been in Chai Wan proper, although I passby all the time on route to somewhere. But Siu Sai Wan is rather quiet and suburb like. Lots of parks, a couple of trails behind Island Resort. If you cannot find any direct owner offers, you can just come to Island Resort (Nam Wan Bun Do in chinese) and come to the island Resort mall. There are several estate agencies like Centaline that can show you any number of places in Island Reosrt.

Funbobby also has a good suggestion in re: Heng Fa Chuen. Hena Fa Chuen is much older but cheaper and even more convenient than Island Resort since they have their own MTR station (Heng Fa Chuen). One of my friends is renting 1200 or 1400 sqft duplex for 22K. Full seaview, amentities (although a little run down), a full shopping mall with super parknshop and lots of restaurants on site. And since they are older, the actual usage is bigger than island resort. So 1200sq ft will seem bigger than 1200 sqft at Island Resort. I think Heng Fa Chuen is about 20 years old if not older whereas Island Resort is about 7 years old. Heng Fa Chuen shopping mall also has lots of estate agencies that can show you Heng Fa Chuen properties.

Thanks to Poiuy, Funbobby and ChristinaM for taking time to share your perspectives. We will definitely visit Chai Wan-Heng Fa Chuen area as we'll be doing some intensive apt-hunting the next few weeks. Cheers.

i would add my recco was for 'Heng Fa Villa" a separate development beside Heng Fa Chuen proper...one negative about Heng Fa Chuen (I lived there last year) is that the water pipes are galvanaized steel, and being 20 years old, they are rusting quite badly...the water has a tendency to be various shades of brown at times...a decent filter/bottled water is a MUST if you live there...the restaurants are good, park n shop is great, as mentioned the clubhouse and facilities are decent tho a bit dated, and you pay a 10,000 initial deposit to use them, plus user fees on top...and yes the efficiency is very high, around 85%.

I don't live in Chai Wan but have worked here for a number of years (actually 5 mins walk from Island resort), in terms of transport the no 788 bus is one of the fastest around town to this part of the island - it goes from Sheung wan (Shun Tak Ferry pier) and ends in Siu Sai Wan. It gets on the Island East Corridor at Wan Chai and literally does not exit until it reaches Chai Wan (closer to Siu Sai Wan than the MTR / town area). When I lived in Wan Chai the bus was about a ten minute ride only and I got home quicker than I do now since moving to North Point. If your office is on the 788 route I wouldn't hesitate to go to Island resort if you like the look of it.
