Hi,
My wife and I are heading over to HK, and I was just wondering if anyone had some advice on the Gold Coast in the New Territories as a place to live? It looks rather nice and reasonable on paper anyway!
We are coming from London, so we understand what its like to have expensive living costs, but is HK really as bad as London?
Plus, is a car a good idea out there?
And does anyone have any idea how much a taxi would be from Central to the gold coast after a night out?
Is the Gold coast and 'lively' enough place at the weekend/mid-week, or is it very quiet?
Many thanks

Gold Coast is nice with some expats there, but there are other choices in the New Territories that are relatively reasonable. Check out Bellagio (brand new) in Sham Tseng, which is 20mins closer to Central than GoldCoast. Taxi from central to goldcoast (without discount) should be well over HK$200. I live in Sham Tseng & take discount taxis & costs $140. If you have kids, it's always good to have a car for the weekends! Weekends are quite busy in GoldCoast due to 'city folks' flocking in....

hmm.. 20mins closer to central. as far as i know, it takes about 25-30mins to drive in to central from the gold coast during the day. the last time, i took a cab from the gold coast to causeway bay at night, it took about 25mins(via the western tunnel) and cost me $256, central should be about $30-35 cheaper.
are you sure that bellagio is that close to central? i figured that you'd have to drive down castle peak road if you lived at Bellagio, not the highway. thus it could take longer than from the gold coast. is there a quick route to central? also, you mentioned something about a discount on taxi fares? can you negotiatie with all taxis in HK?
thanks!

Central to Bellagio through the Western Tunnel is 25-30 minutes and to Tuen Mun is another 10 minutes all without traffic. The Western Tunnel costs $40 each time so factor that in if you are not taking a bus. At Sham Tseng where Bellagio is there are on and off ramps for the motorway going both ways.
