Many expats choose to live in village houses and indeed Sai Kung an d Clearwater Bay are expat ghettos.
I was wondering if anyone was impacted by the present crackdown on illegal structures and what their views are on how the dispute will unfold?
Personally I'm presently torn between whether this is merely a political move by Carrie Lam to ensure a promotion or a genuine attempt to clear the NT of these structures over a number of years, despite the enormous potential for social discontent.

Hi I am also interested in people's views here. If people register their structures is it likely that they will be permitted to keep them or not? What are the likely scenarios..

Villagers have been advised to boycott the registration process due to the illogical and unfair nature of it. The government is asking individuals to voluntarily register certain types of structure with a 5 year grace (e.g only covering 50% of rooftop or canopies). However, they may still be asked to be removed beyond this date.

How can anyone predict that?
My guess is:
+ A compromise will be reached
+ Some people will be allowed to keep the illegal structure, but only under limited, defined circumstances, and
+ Only after an (expensive?) inspection, and after some "development premium" has been paid to the government
I do not think there will be a "free lunch" for anyone, whatever some may hope for

The deadline for reporting will be end of this Month. I've worked for several villages on this UBW reporting scheme for the pass few week. If you need any help, please drop me an email : dickdeewong@yahoo.com.hk

Anyway I can report a roof structure which is marginally above 50% ?
Please support our advertisers:
Basically roof structure over 50% fall within Buildings Department first priorty for issuing removal order and it's not eligible to be registered. However, I found that there is always misinterpretation on the criteria from the xpats, and, depending on individual cases, there is some other solution to deal with them. So please drop me an email to describe your case.
