I'm several months into a 3 year contract but the development is now being renovated from top to bottom. Drilling, banging, dust, uneven floors, the works. We of course knew nothing of this when we moved in.
The worst thing is that my wife is pregnant and due to drop in a few weeks in the middle of a building site. It will be unsafe for mother & child to be living here.
I'm resigned to losing 2 months deposit and moving out but the landlord is a heartless so and so (aren't they all) and tells me that even 2 months is not enough.
Is there anything I can do to escape? How difficult will it be for him to chase me if I move out without a trace? He will after all have 2 months deposit in his back pocket.

With two months deposit it is unlikely to proceed beyond you losing the cash. The landlords main concern will be reletting the apartment because of the work, but not much else he / she can do.

JJALD,
Ta for the reassurance. It's bad enough losing 2 months but worth it to find a peaceful environment for wife & baby.

Thanks Dadda.
Problem is the original landlord has changed and while discussions over the renovations had clearly been ongoing for months, I think that the decision to push ahead was only made after we moved in. Bugger!
Legal advice seems conflicting given the ambiguous wording of the tenancy agreement. Reckon I'll side with the lawyer who says we can go!
