I have been told conflicting answers about who the cheque given as a deposit for my apartment can be made out to.
The agent insists it must be a solicitor, but the solicitor claims provided i can prove i have significant equity in the property the cheque can be made to me?
Thanks!

If I was not sure about the person I was buying from, I would only make the cheque out to a lawyer, otherwise to the person named on the land search (most people in HK demand this method). If it was my property being sold, I always ask to me personally, though if the purchaser was concerned and demanded to make payable to my lawyer I wouldn't really care (assuming I know my lawyers first, don't want it made out to someone I have never met).
