Cake decorating business from home?

ORIGINAL POST

Hi. I have recently started cake decorating as a hobby, and many people in the complex that I live in have been requesting that I start selling them cakes/cupcakes. While I would love to do so since it would be an extra source of income, I would prefer to go about this the right way and set up a home business first. Has anyone done something similar or can anyone offer some advice on how to go about starting a legal cake decorating business from home?

I would think that you could set yourself up as a sole proprietor and keep a simple set of accounts. You can offset your profits with cost of ingredients, delivery costs, advertising etc.

We use to get our yummy pickled stuff, marmalade etc from someone who does it from her house that carried her initials on labels.

I'm a very good and confident cook of anything and everything but I must say her goods were very good and she sells among the "ladies who lunches" as she, herself is one of them. I remember telling my boss we've run out of certain stuff we bought from her and was told she stopped as someone from "authority" came and visited her house and declared her massive, spanking clean kitchen is not ideal for such business. I heard ( but can't confirm) that Lady XXX was penalized for it.

It's one thing to do it to friends but if you want to make it into a business--- start clean, start the proper/legal way.

Orangeman, The OP said she wanted to do a "legal cake decorating" company. NOT registering your company and going through the whole process is skipping the law. No one ratted on Lady XXX, her business just grew and she thought it was time to expand and be more visible to consumer.

Hi HKexpatz,

As cheeky says, register your business as a sole proprietor. There's also food preparation standards and regulations you'll have to meet as others have mentioned.

You may also have to get yourself an MPF as a self-employed person and public liability insurance if you're concerned that someone might try sueing you.

I can tell you more about MPF and public liability insurance if you like, but I think you're not at that point yet.

Thanx Chris & Dipper!

I have actually decided to rather stick to cake decorating as a hobby for now, since I was unable to get any definite info on how to go about making this a legal home business, and I have no clue if it is even possible to begin with! I really don't want to end up being the next Lady XXX, so think I'll stick to baking for the love of it!

If at some point in the future I feel that I have further time and money to invest in setting up a licensed premises for food preparation (as dipper has suggested), I'll definitely consider it! Thanks again to everyone for your input!

You're welcome HKexpatz.

Setting up a business can be a whole lot of work and needs careful planning to make sure you don't end up with a non-profitable business after all you've invested in time, hard work and money into it. Definitely not something to be considered lightly.

A totally different ballpark from enjoying your hobby for the fun of it!
