Simple question - what do I get for my money?

If I have approx 28 - 30 HK$ for housing, can I get a decent sized apartment in a central location? Say, a 2-bed furnished place near enough to Central where I will be working.

Thanks for any help.

My initial response would be that you'll be pushing it. That's based on my own search at various stages over the last 2 years. But it does depend on your definition of 'near enough' because the transport here in HK is far, far better than in most other cities and commuting times are generally much less. So whilst I was thinking about 'within walking distance' you might be OK if you venture a bit further afield and are OK with, say, a 20-30 minute commute on the MTR.

you will get something in central/mid-levels, you do not need to commute. But it'll take a lot of searching. The budget is fine for a three bedroom 1000 sq ft apartment but some of the standards are dubious. You may need to view as many as 60 apartments to get the one you want. They are there you just need to look very hard.

you'll be fine to find something for that price - midlevels 800-1000 sq ft. Oen problem though is that often they stuff 3 beds into that so they are very small rooms. there are a few websites (which icant mention on here) which will give you a good idea. Do a google on Hong kong real estate

You will absolutely get something in that budget if your expectations aren't too high. If you search in an older building, without facility you can definately get 1000sq.ft in that budget. Of course the closer you get to Central the higher your rent and the smaller the place. You may want to look in the Mid Levels on Caine Rd or Robinson Road. Tranportation is great here so you can get to Central within 15 minutes. Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for the feedback !

I really do not need anything too big. So, a bit more specific:

Anything over 750 sq ft

Furnished

1 or 2 bedrooms

A quick ride on public transport (say 10-15 minutes) from Central

So, looking for convenience over luxury, though of course I don't want to be slumming it...

Thanks.

For mid-levels you can walk in 10 mins no need for public transport or bus in 5 minutes. You will need at least 2 bedrooms because there is no storage space in most apartments, so think what you need and add another bedroom for storage. There are usually no wardrobes or cupboards for ironing board, etc so you really do need additional bedroom. Furnished are not that popular you may have to take unfurnished and negotiate with landlord for furniture, so don't limit your search to furnished otherwise you'll have limited options.
