Easter Rental - Lantau - any leads?

ORIGINAL POST

My wife and I would like to rent a house over the Easter holidays on Lantau, but have not found anywhere that lists properties.

A village house, a garden, clean.

Does anyone have any guidance or introductions to some-one who may have a home there that would like to make a short term rental over the holidays?

Appreciate any advice.

I do find it rather astonishing that people seem to think that someone would have a flat or house, keep it vacant until a major holiday, and then rent it out for peppercorn.

You are likely to find a better rate on Novotel, which is at least in that business.

When I thought of offering my flat as a serviced apartment, I quickly realised that I would have to match the prevailing rents (about double what one pays for a one year rental), if I was to have a chance of covering voids, servicing costs, wear and tear, etc.

In the end, I decided it was not worth the hassles, and rented my flat out like everyone else.

Maybe the spoiled expats who come up with these notions need to develop a bit of business sense, so they have some idea of what is possible.

Rant over, and please accept my apologies, if I am wide of the mark

Yes.

A reasonable rent would be a different matter, in which case my comment would be wide of the mark.

Thanks for your suggestions, sounds like the Novotel is a good option.

A holiday rental is not that unusual a prospect, it happens all around the world, most often when the numbers add up correctly for everyone i.e. landlord covers costs and makes a profit, holiday maker feels it is worthwhile making the spend for what is on offer. Owners or owner occupiers may even choose to go somewhere else over the holiday period, allowing them to enjoy a different holiday option and earn the holiday rent.

As to how wanting to enjoy time staying in HK's beautiful landscape, not just ferrying in and out for the day or burning up the skies flying elsewhere in the world to take a few days off, makes me a spoiled expat, I am not quite sure. OTP, in case you were thinking about it again, I do suggest you do not get into the hospitality business, it does not appear to be your natural inclination.

Okay. That's your opinion.

Maybe you should ask one of my dozen historical tenants if I was a good landlord.

I find that having a realistic view of both sides interests helps in keeping a relationship working well.

Did you find a place, and what did you pay? I am genuinely curious
