Lawyers fees - buying a property

Does anyone know what the standard cost are for lawyers 'disbursement' fees when buying a property?

We were told it would be around a $1k on top of their standard service charge for 'disbursements' covering fees etc. However it has turned out quite a bit more than that for:

Land registry search fees

Travelling expenses, photocopying, postage

Fees for bankrupcy/winding-up searches

Registration fees on Agreement for Sale & Purchase

Registration fee on Assignment

Registration fee on Mortgage/Legal Charge

Stamp duty on Assignment

Copying charges for Land Registry title deeds

I am not sure how it works in HK but our friends did not pay near as much as we have been charged - does anyone know the standard?!

Thank you very much for your help!

Thanks Patrick. Very helpful!

In terms of the search and registration fees though shouldn't these be standard? Does anyone know how much the following should be:

1. Registration fee on Mortgage/Legal Charge

2. Fees for bankruptcy/winding-up searches

or where we can find out?

Thanks!

HSBC has a cost calculator on their website. For my purchase, these were the disbursements:

$210 - Agreement registration

$450 - Assignment

$450 - Mortgage deed

$500-$600 - Land search

$85 per bankruptcy search
