Hi All,
We are thinking of moving to a flat in Olympic pretty soon. Everything seems perfect but someone told me that it smells really bad that area in summer because it's near a sewage outlet. Apparently you can't tell at the moment because it's winter but it smells awful in summer and comes through the air con. Any advice? I would really like to know if it's true.
Thanks

Don't know about sewage, but in general it gets smelly everywhere during the summer. Especially if if you live in a busy area with restaurants/market/traffic.

Pauline,
DB would not be a good option especially if you husband is working in Guanghzou. He would have to commute from Ferry to Subway cross the China boarder and hop into a cab to get to work every day aproximately 2 hours commute and fighting the crowd. Also your children would have to hop on a ferry to meet their school bus to take them to school if they can't get into the school in DB. I hear great things about DB and I think DB is great if you have young or small children as it is an expat haven.

It depends on how your husband is travelling to Guangzhou and whether he does it on a daily or weekly basis.
If he takes a plane it's easy - airport bus takes 25min from the Plaza and leaves every 30min. By train = nightmare. A lengthy lourney to Hunghom station (at least an hour, probably longer) and then the train journey to Guangzhou (1,5 - 2 hours last time I went).

I live in Olympic and sometimes I smell sulfur, not too often though. My husband who is American however always complains about the air. I think he feels that way because people at work keep talking about it.

Olympic is fairly close to what used to be the Yaumatei typhoon shelter, long since reclaimed. The air still retains the heavy and permeating odour of sulphur-dioxide, especially in the early mornings, perhaps after everyone in Shan Shui Po has had breakfast and completed their morning ablutions.

There is definitely a smell of old farts. I can even smell it from when the MTR doors open. People in the carriage start looking around to see who it was that passed wind with noses all scrunched up but don't realize it's actually coming from the station.

Haha.
Try telling that to the people who spent over HK$40,000 on flats at Imperial Cullinan.
Perhaps they thought it smelled like perfume.
