I'm about to move to HK this year (although now i'm in KL) and my company (a UK based company) plans to open new office in

in Kowloon Bay. Last week I have been in HK with my bosses and i got a chance to see around 2 housing areas 1. Amoy Garden 2. Telford Square. Anyhow I dont like the place although it is convenience for me to go to the new office because the buildings are old, dirty, and crowded. I am looking for a quite place, easy to get around with MTR or public transport, a bit of greenery, and easy to find foods, shops and clinics. My company will pay for the rental of not more than HK10,000 per month with a studio/1 room/2 rooms. Do you think around the area of Kowloon Bay or any area not too far from it (properly less than 30 min from home to office) by MTR or public transport ? I can stay farer if need the living condition is better and can compromise with more travel time.

Hi Cyltess, I saw your thread in Moms and Dads. Just thought I would give you some advice, I am very familiar with Kowloon areas...

Kowloon Bay- convenient, but if you are an expat, you MIGHT not be able to tolerate the cultural and social differences in that area. Most are local families, and the Kowloon Bay area are mostly factories/manufacturing companies....

Amoy Garden, definitely not. Just my own bias... simply b/c that's where SARS started, something haunts me about there. Telford, it's ok... but it's old, and the pipes there are problems... there is always sewage smell everywhere. The mall is really busy, and on weekends, you really don't want to walk around the area... too crowded and busy.

I think you should consider living in Tseung Kwan O area, there are mini bus and MTR accessibly to Kowloon Bay. Apartments are newer, and rent should be within your budget if around 1 room and a den possibly. It would take you about 20 minutes to get to KB by MTR including the walking up and down, but I don't know where your office is in KB. MIni bus are good option too.

The other option is finding an apartment in Kowloon City. It's a nice area b/c it has many variety of apartments, some VERY old, some VERY new, affordable, LOTS of things to eat and LOTS of cultural shops, and home needs shops, and wholesaler for clothing, supermarkets.... etc.

There is mini bus to KB too, you would be there in 10 minutes. No MTR from Kowloon City though.

Don't live in Kwun Tong, the housing there are super old, and it's due for complete demolishing the area by the Government.

My no. 1 option would be somewhere in TKO.

Laguna City, yes, that's alright too..... it's very dense though, but quite convenient.

Hi Katetam

Thanks for your advise. I really agreed what you said about Amoy Garden and Telford square. For Amoy Garden, first impression was the SARS begun place and then i got the chance to see a few apartments inside, not really what i want. At the Telford Square, I only saw from the outside surrounding and did not has a chance to see the interior of the apartment. Anyway, both places are too old, over crowded.

My company may set up the office at Skyline Tower or at Nam Fong Commercial Centre. I know MTR is at Telford Square but may be still need to walk /or take bus to the office. Is it better to go to office by minibus or by MTR (in term of convenience to reach office)?

Yes, I will check on TKO and the areas nearby like Laguna City. I hope to find an apartment that is not old, not noisy, the area is not too crowded, easy to access to shops, clinics (although i am very healthy :) )food and the pollution is not too high. About TKO, can you give me any name of residential building that i can check on ? I am a single lady so I thought of finding an apartment with studio/1 room (but most of the apartment is with 2 rooms/3 rooms.) Also, the place must be safe to stay.

How with other places like Tiu Keng Leng, Choi Hung, Diamond Hill, Wong Tai Sin ( i saw these MTR stations along the way to Kowloon Bay)?

Sorry if I have too many questions to ask. Rgds.

Sai Kung is also an option if you want to be near other ex-pats and western food. There is a minibus (not very frequent, every 20 mins and it takes less than half an hour) that runs between the two, otherwise catch the more frequent Choi Hung minibus and then continue on the MTR.

Hi singsing,Sai Kung may not my first choice as it is a bit outskirts and i prefer to take MTR rather than buses. But thanks to your info too.

Don't forget to check out Sceneway Garden which is right on top of Lam Tin MTR. It has a award wining private garden. You would be able to get a 2-3 bedroom flat for $10,000. (All depends on conditions of the flat and the view)
