Level of freedom for home owners

I come from a country where stand-alone houses are common and thus where you have the freedom to pretty much change/do whatever you want in your home.

What are the limitations for owners of flats? Say I buy a 3 bedroom flat, but decide to make it spacier by knocking out one of the walls and make it a two bedroom?

Is this allowed? Does it depend on building to building? Would I need special permission? Does the floorplan need to be updated?

thanks

What I can tell you for certain is:

There are certain walls that you cannot touch, since they are structural,

and may have impact on the ability of the building to hold weight

OTP is correct. You cannot make structural changes without having them approved by the Bulidings Department who, I assume, would require an engineers report etc etc. You may also require approvaly from other owners under the Body Corporate Rules.

Non-structural changes depend on the Body Corporate Rules.

yes.

Get hold of the Body Corporate Rules (for the building), if you can
