Can I start a business in HK while currently working for another company?

I work for a company who sponsors my visa. Meanwhile, as a side project, I have started a different company and registererd it with the gov of HK and have done quite a bit of business. I was under the impression that as long as I employ others and do not pay myself, (keeping profits as a rainy day retirement fund), I am not breaking any laws. Does anybody know if that is true?

I know that working freelance and getting paid for jobs outside of your current employer is illeagal without a proper letter. But if I as the owner dont get paid....???

the simple rule is you can own a company but can not work for it

and then there is lots of grey area in between.

But can I recieve money from the business? If the business hires outside talent to perform duties and pays them and my company is the middle man, can I recieve money for my services?
