Where to live????

Hi, we have just arrived in Hong Kong. Currently we are staying in the serviced apartments of the Parkview. Now it is time to start looking for some permanant accom. We are a young family of 5 so we need space and my husband is working in Causeway Bay. 35mins travel time would be ideal, $60,000/m is our budget. I would like a complex style arrangement as my husband travels a lot for work and I thought it would be easier to meet friends. Any ideas/suggestions would be most appreciated as we have no idea where to start. I am also looking for a helper so if you can recommend a good one, please email me.

Thanks

First of all, welcome! Your budget is ample and it is really just a question of trading off space against the smartness of location/facilities. Your budget should be fine to get you a 3-bed apartment in Parkview (not serviced); and the facilities you have there are hard to beat. But if you moved to less fashionable places such as Happy Valley, you could get probably 50% more space for your money. And in Shaukeiwan, you could have somewhere really huge for that money (and still be well within your travel time to Causeway Bay). So which is more important to you - the "address" or the facilities? The only thing I would suggest is that you stay east of Central, as crossing Central will add greatly to travel times and stress.

If your husband is working in Causeway bay, why not look at Hong Lok Yuen. For 60,000 you can have a 3500 sq/ft house and garden. We pay 62 and have a pool as well. The clubhouse is fine. There is an international school right on the estate. The children walk to their friends houses, etc, etc. If your husband drove to Causeway bay it would take about 40 minutes tops using the Eastern Corridor.

I can be in Central in 30-40 minutes from Hong Lok Yuen. Schools abound around here. Depends what you want for your children. The airport is 45 mins away on a nice hiway. Plus you have the peace of the country.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Yes, the Parkview has loads of services, however the apartments seem to be all "old" style.

Im off to Discovery Bay tomorrow to check out what is there as many people suggest that it is great for children.

There seems to be long waiting lists for the International schools and I am not apposed to the ESF schools.

My husband used to travel 1.20mins to work in Sydney, however it seems so strange to the relocation company that he does not mind travelling 30mins to work here.

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Patrick,

You seem really knowledgeable about the areas. My husband and I together with our three children will be moving to Hong Kong in the summer of 2006. We are from Southern California. We have a freshman in high School, an eight grader and a kindergartener. We want to place them all in Hong Kong International School, still live in a place where we can experience Chinese culture and the locals and not be completely surrounded by all expats and Westerners, have a 1,200 square feet minimum living quarters with three bedrooms at least, have proximity to Central where my husband will be working, convenience to and from the airport as he will be traveling around Asia once a week and most especially not a big hassle for our kids to commute to school and also easy access for us to experience Hong Kong living. Any suggestions in mind as to what could possibly be the best area for us to live considering all these variables??? We are looking to spend $40,000-$50,000HK. HELP!!!
