How much notice to give on a lease about to expire?

Our lease/contract expires at the end of this month and we have not heard anything from the landlord. Our feeling was that he was content with us just paying the rent. We have since seen another place we would like to move to. How much notice would we have to give the landlord in order to get our deposit back. Idealy we would like to move in March as this gives the landlord a bit of notice but we dont want to lose the other place either (or the deposit on our current place) and may have to move at the end of the month. Our contract was a standard 2 year contract. Where do both parties stand on this?
