Hi all

My wife and I are consering moving to HK for 3 years. One aspect would be quality of living and where one could make oneself a good life. I am willing to spend up to 55'000 HKD for housing and I am just wondering if this would buy us anything reasonable on the South side. What we are looking for is some kind of a good environment for my wife and my daughter, also on the hot days, so to speak swimming pool, gym, club etc. this sort of thing. Also, obviously we try to be as far away from the polution as possible.

Any recommendation on

- what the good neighborhoods are for families?

- any recommendation where to look on the south side?

- any recommendation where to find potentially a good social/sporting club one can still enter and pay?

- Any tips how to find appartments best?

All help and hints would be greatly appreciated!

Almost everyone I know in with similar family /budget/ lifestyle priorities spends weeks looking around everywhere and then ends up at Hong Kong Parkview. Pools, kids play area, lots of facilities, one of the largest supermarkets in HK, shuttle bus to business district, adjacent to a large country park....etc etc. Your budget would get you a 3-bedroom apartment there.

You can see details at the following website....the website refers only to the serviced apartments in the complex (which are expensive and not what you want); but it also shows location details and info on the facilities (which are the same for both serviced and nonserviced apartments there).

Your budget give your lots of choices in HK, Clear Water Bay area is great for family. The air is fresher than any other part of HK close to nature.

Pok Fu lam is a good area where I live and they have a few compounds which have great facilities for families eg Baguio Villas and Scenic Villas. There is a country park near by where you can walk to the peak. When I moved here I used Landscope and they are excellent at relocating foreigners and have a easy site to use. Hope this helps!

Wow, is Parkview so much now, Patrick? The last lease I signed on behalf of an employee there was HK$45k (and I signed one for HK$26k just after SARS)!. Amazing.

Hi

thx for this.. quite frustrating though to a certain extent. If you have signed a lease, will the price stay the same over a period, or does it go up with the market?

Thanks for tip

Oliver....if you are set with moving to the Southside, based on your budget you should take a look at The Manhattan and Pacific View..those two buildings have great facilities. You do have the American Club out there as well shall you be interested in joining such a place..clubs are quite costly here though.)

Also take in account where you are working. The commute to the city/Central is quite a ride from the Southside (30mins).

If you want to be away from the pollution but yet be close to the city, Hong Kong Parkview is a great median. You are up on the hill above the exhaust of the city but yet you are centralize to go to the southside or to Central. Got friends that live there that absolutely love it there. And since you have a 2 year old, they also have a pre-school on the premises so you don't have to worry about the nearest pre-school etc.

Shoot me a message shall you have any further questions. We were in your shoes a year ago and I wish I had someone to help us. Good Luck with everything.

Is there a specific reason you want to be on the south side? You might consider Discovery Bay. It is great for families. Your budget will get you a nice place with a garden. There are 2 clubs with pools, play rooms, kindermusik, good coffee and mothers groups. It's cleaner then most places in HK. No cars, you can hike, push a stroller, run, ride a bike. Only drawback is that it is 30 min ferry from Central.
