Roof-top Structures

About to errect something on our village house roof-top mainly to keep the sun off the roof so it's not too hot during the summer time when we're sleeping or indoors. Looking at perhaps an awning (retractable that covers at least 70% of the roof-top).

Just wondering what other people have had done and at what kind of cost. Would be intesting to hear from people who have had timber structures as this is also another possibility.

Thank you!

thanks for the feeback oldhand. i was thinking the same as it would take off (in real strong wind) if i fitted a two sided retracting awning from a 'goal post' metal structure. i've had a look at one where there is a structural frame on both sides fixed to the wall of the roof like rails where the electric motor would extend/retract the shade. this method of fixing is better on windy days compared to an awning that just extends. I'd prefer not use the rail option as initial prices coming back aren't exactly cheap at around $30-$40K.
