I'm flat sharing and have been renting for three months. I travel and work a lot spending half my time in Hong Kong and the other half overseas. I had informed my flatmate I will be back home one evening and will be heading to bed early as I had an early start the next morning. When I arrived home, I found two people in my room half dressed and embarrassed but very apologetic. I demanded an explanation and they informed me my flatmate had allowed them to stay at my place while I'm away and that they were friends visiting from overseas. I headed straight to bed exhausted but allowed them to crash on the couch (afterall it wasn't their fault). The friends informs me the next morning that they had talked to my flatmate about the predicament the night she arrived home while I was sleeping. I was hoping that I would be able to talk to her before I left the next day. However, no attempt of a face to face explanation or apology was ever made other than an apologetic sms message sent to me before I flew off. I'm very upset. I have no idea what's been going on in my room while I'm away. Thoughts of whether these strangers had sex in my own bed, if they had gone through my personal belongings, and who else has been allowed to stay in my place?, etc. have been crossing my mind. I'm considering moving out now. I feel I can't trust the person I live with anymore and may get irritated by everything she does. I am not on contract and have a damage deposit that is equivalent to just over the month's rent and am seriously tempted to pack up and leave immediately. What do you think?

Hi Daez
Ofcourse they have been shagging in your bed, them and evey other friend that needed a free bed and they would have gone through your stuff too since we are all curious people. I would have firstly locked my bedroom if i wasn't going to be in the flat, the thought of other people doing it in my bed is terrible and since your friend let this happen i would move out and leave her to pay the full rent.

Hi Saint,
You're right about the snooping and shagging and so everyone tells me...I should have locked my room. The other concern is now that I have to lock my room, the cleaner has no access to it when I'm away which is a nuisance. I have flat shared before with other new people I just met in London and Spain and never had this kind of problem. Everyone was respectable and responsible. Think I will take your advice. Thank you!

that's dis-respectful of your flatmate. but then again why di you also leave your room accessible? provided that you have your own key to your room and can lock it. if that's not the case then its another story namely the disrespect of you flatmate. if you want to move to a different flat then do so, if not then you need to lock you room with all your valuables inside it. but then again they might destroy the lock and steal from you so better yet move out anyway.

I agree with all the posts above. Had a almost similar experience when I was living as a PG (Paying Guest). I didn't lock my room so that the room could be cleaned but later found out the landlady used to go around wearing my clothes. Needless to say what happened to you is also a breach of trust. You do need to move out, in future lock your room and if sharing a bathroom with your flatmate, would suggest also locking your bath toiletries in your room when you go out of town.

Hi Everyone,
Kamaole: Absolutely, I was appalled that the situation was handled with just a sms. You are right, she didn't want to fess up, was avoiding confrontation, was immature in the way she handled the situation, showed a lack of good judgment (again) and didn't consider this a serious problem.
Kulafu: It was truly a total disregard for me, my belongings and my space. I fear that this will continue unless I move.
RA: Thank you for sharing your experience. I appreciate where you are coming from. I am really shocked that your ex-landlady did that! I have a sensitive allergy to dust so without the cleaner being accessible to my room, this causes a health problem for me.
inkpot88: Totally right about busting them and not giving a toss!!! I still have no idea who or how often people were staying in my room! So perhaps it was a blessing in disguise?
The whole experience has really got me on edge to the point that I've made up my mind to move. I smsed my flatmate (as it seems to be her preferred way of communication) that I'm moving out the moment I return. She of course replied that she preferred I didn't and would like to discuss it further- which is too late. I have packed and moved my stuff out and feel so much better and happier now that I'm away from that awkward predicament. Thank you all for your concern and helpful advice! :)

For some reason this wouldn't bother me that much. I don't know why but it wouldn't - as long as the guests were polite. I must have some hidden hippy gene.

Er... what lice? Don't think most people are crawling with lice these days otherwise our offices in HK would be ridden with them. Of course would wash the sheets. As for this sex thing, I think a lot of it goes on. Oh yes... Mark my words.

Loyd: If it's not lice, it could be crabs? I could be rolling around my bed and accidentally find suspicious stains :P Errr...I don't want to know the finer details. Maybe your tolerance is better than mine. If you're looking for a room to rent, let me know. You can have my old room.

Loyd, you're kidding right. you don't have a problem with strangers having sex on your bed (presumably one you share with a partner)? If you weren't active on this forum, your comment could only come from a troll.

You've never slept in a hotel bed, tsuiwah?

Ringo23 That's right. It's not as if they change the bed every time a couple share a hotel room is it? Not to mention the ahem... working girls that also ply their trade in the likes of the Shangri-la, Marriot. You sleep in one of those beds and you've probably slept with half of Asia.

I dunno what hotels you stay in, I make sure I have clean sheets! Plus I used to work in the industry, every hotel I worked at changed the sheets. Now the bidet towels, well, I dunno why anyone would use one no matter how muche they bleached and scorched those things!
