HSH. Do you have a flat there per chance?

Technically it is Sheung Wan but as it is a 5minute walk to the escalator at Staunton St I imagine most people will call it Soho. I live another couple of minutes walk along the street and highly recommend it - super convenient and proper Sheung Wan down the hill is great with a gym and every convenience store you could ever want. Maybe it is not for you but I for one and pleased that a building like that means more shops and cafes for the rest of us.

It's possibly a 5 minute sprint to the escalator but hardly a 5 minute walk

Getting to the escalator along Hollywood Road would take maybe 8 minutes at HK walking pace and only 5-6 at a normal persons pace. If you go out the back onto Bridges St and walk to the escalator at Staunton St is would only be 5 minutes even at HK pace but just for you if I remember I will time it on the weekend and if I'm really bored I'll count the paces. My biggest gripe about HK is the way people walk so slow and wander all over the road - getting to the destination would be much quicker if people would just walk in a straight line.

I have been there and it is packed with people looking for a flat. It is very close to the escalator and hardly more than a few minutes walk. Some of the flats have a great city view. I think it is great life style in one of the most popular and boheme areas of Hong Kong. Just walk around the neighborhood and get a feel.
I have compared some of the rents with other flats around the area (by far not same standard) and some are really competitive.
Check it out yourself...

just walked from the escalator, along Staunton and then Bridges St to the back of Centrestage - 3.5minutes, 400 steps so I stad corrected it is less than 5 minutes from the escalator, call it Soho or Sheung Wan I just call it convenient. If you like the area check out Cherry Crest at the end of the street as an alternative.

Think about it - this area is the only way Central/SoHo can expand - by building into rundown Sheung Wan. There is nowhere else that Central can go with the Harbour/Admiralty on 2 sides and busy overdeveloped mid-levels on the other. Will take time, but the direction is Sheung Wan and there is demand. How many luxury developents are there being launched in Central now ? Not many. Personally, I wouldn't buy Centre Stage as its asking Central prices but not actually in Central, and I would want to see more meaningful development in the area. But CS a better longterm buy than the new mega "luxury" development staring at old Kai Tak's runway. Now that area is a dump

A few weeks ago there was a protest rally by the sign but I had no idea what it was about. I think the same people that own Centrestage and the empty lot opposite the sign are buying up all the property in the area and want the old Police barracks too but the residents want it to be a park or something for the community as it is the last bit of public land in the area. I think a park or something would be great and would boost the values of their other properties more than if they were to build something on the site.

It is really interesting reading these posts about CentreStage. I am new to Hong Kong and so not affected ( as yet) by prenotions and perhaps a little bit of snobbery that goes with long term residency.
I have viewed MANY apartments all over Mid-Levels and I must say that I have seen some complete dumps. It is amazing how staying in a place for a long time can alter your perception of what is really on offer. It is always relative ....I understand that.....but as I said, I am here with fresh eyes:)
I also viewed some apartments at CenterStage and thought that they were absolutely fine for what was on offer. Brand New Clean apartments with a balcony. Kitchens with washer/dryer/gas stove/stainless stell sink, small TV screen etc . All sparkling clean. Overall, the quality of the bathroom and kitchen were really good and the bedrooms has marble window sills, giving that extra bit of space. The rooms also have internal video surveillance and other gadgets such as thumprint entry etc.
I also walked from CentreStage from teh back entry to teh escalator and indeed it was less than a 5 minute walk.
I also very much liked the main entrance on Hollywood Road and the reception area on the 5th floor.
Many apartments did seem quite small, but I understand that is Hong Kong!!
I also looked at apartments on Caine Road and Robinson Road and found many to be very noisy, more expensive , quite old and dark inside.
So, I would say that CentreStage seems quite a good find. In terms of it not being in Central.....I am yet to see what central offers that CentreStage doesnt!
Any other suggestions for new apartments appreciated...I have seen maybe 100 already:):)

From a rental perspective, unless you're a gadgets person, the Centre Stage is overpriced. The apartment I looked at was 540sqft on the 7th floor - asking 20k p/m (so say 18.5 after some haggling). It does feel rather small & could have been better if they'd knocked the wall through between the bedrooms (a usual gripe in HK, but esp. annoying for a new build). The view was directly into Hollywood Terrace - so I suppose you get to be friendly with the neighbours at least!
I looked at about 60 flats in total. I almost went for a place in Princeton Tower (Kennedy Town) - a relatively new build, has gym, views of the harbour above the 30th floor or so and sizes almost 700sqft. Kitchen & shower are decent & new as well (think the building is ~3yrs old), although of course no whirlpool or camera to spy on your lounge! for anybody working in Central it's still easy enough reach as the bus is only 5mins (as opposed to 10mins walk on the escalator) and the asking price (for the 32nd floor with harbour view) was only 15k....cheap as chips!
As it was, I ended up with an apartment on Robinson road for 18k as I was completely sold on the view - complete harbour panorama from Disneyland to North point (assuming no smog).
My experience anyway....I was also helped by having a company sponsored agent (shameless plug: Bonvest). Thought they were really good in finding me a place & pretty patient considering they showed me 60+ flats.....

My husband and I had a look at the 900-ish apts in CentreStage and think they are grossly overpriced (renatl of 26k - 35k!!). The so-called helper's room was so tidy we seriously doubt it could fit a single bed. The appliances in the kitchen do look nice and expensive, but the small TV in the kitchen and in front of the toilet seat are, to me, useless.
There are plenty of other apt complexes in the vicinity that are much cheaper and as good.
