Moving to HK with my dog

ORIGINAL POST

I will be moving to HK with my dog. I am already preparing myself to live in a much smaller place than I have now. Everyone more or less has told me that most lanlords will not allow dogs. I will be working at IFC and want to live as close as possible. I am working on a budget of 10-12K HKD a month. Do you think that I can find a decent place to live with my four legged darling? I don't mind a small place but hte bathroom and the kitchen needs to be clean and modern. Please advise!!!!

Well the good news is with your budget and wanting to stay near your work chances are the only place you will find will be in one of the older low rise building. Being that it's an older building the chances are the landlord may allow for your dog. Your best best is to look in Mid Levels West. You could probably find a place in an older building around 400-550 sq. ft. within that budget.

Thanks qvong... your response is much appreciated. I haven't been in HK to look at apts the company will put me up in a serviced apt for a month. Everything that is posted online seems to be way out of my budget not to mention I have my little boy which doesn't help at all.

No worries you will find something as long as you are not high maitanance and have heaps of demands. Being that you will be here for a month you will get a feel for where you want to live.. If you are a single guy/girl chances are you want to be as close to the night life as possible. You may consider looking in areas such as Wanchai / Shueng Wan as they are only one MTR stop away from Central and IFC. Check out www.hongkonghomes.com it'll give you a general layout of Hong Kong and give you some ideas of what your budget can get you on the search also there are many postings of places on this site that fits within your budget.

If you choose midlevels the best place to walk your dog is Bowen Road but take care - some nasty person puts poisoned meat on the road. We opted to leave our dog at home but several people I work with have dogs and love living in the new territories - not for me but cheap and worth a look - if we had bought our dog that is probably where we would be.

I would recommend Kennedy Town. There are some older apartments with lower rents and you are close to walks for the dog on the Peak (Lung Fu Shan Country Park specifically if you want to Google it). We live on Sands Street which is pedestrian only (so no car access...) - many many people have dogs here and it's very quiet, yet convenient. We have 2 dogs and I think that for this budget it is quite good for the dogs. If you like you can PM me as we are moving out Aug.1st and if you are interested I can send you our landlord's email. We are paying rent within your budget for a 900 sq.foot place (2 bedrooms). It's only 20min to the IFC from here with many transportation options.

Good luck!

Hi,

I'd recommend Mid-Level West - Prince Terrace, Ying Fai Court, Peel Street, Mosque Street, Mosque Junction, Castle Road kinds of area where you can find flats within your budget !

This area is accessible via the outdoor escalator & is only 10 minutes walk from IFC !

I live in this area & have many options to walk my doggie ! Met a lot of new friends who got doggies too !

On the weekend, I can get everything done between this area & IFC all in walking distance ! Shopping for food in the wet markets / supermarkets, int'l food stores, vet, pet grooming & accessories, dry cleaning, loads of take-out places & food deliveries, flower shop, bars, coffee shops, restaurants, gift shops, spa, nail salon, churches, convenient stores .... just one phone call, all my friends can gather at a place for drinks within minutes !

Good Luck !

Whooo Hoo! I have hope now. After many searches online I've gotten pretty disappointed, figured to put the search aside until I am sctually there. (Oh yeah and keep my expectations low) One of the options was to share but after living alone for so long that was out of the question.

The good thing is that I will be put up in a serviced apt for a month in that area as well. It'll give me time to check out the area and it's surroundings. Thanks Guardian Angel...I've travelled there quite often for business but it will be my first time living there. Looking forward to it!

Hi mhtc,

no worries at all ! in this area, you can find apt fr HK$6k & up for around 400-600 sq ft unfurnished or HK$8k - 12K+ similar size furnished ! keep checking asiaxpat "Flat to Let" from direct owners just to be familiar with the possible rates / area / bldg etc as well as saving agency fee! better wait till you get here cos the property market seems to be adjusting itself ... price / rent seems to have stopped rising now !

What i also did was to walk my dog around my target area and if coming across an interesting bldg, check w/ the mgmt office to see if they're aware of any unit being let out, leave your tel with them and indicate to give them a bit of "tips $$$" ... save you agency fee (half month rent) !

not sure where you'll be coming from ... I find the pet accessories in HK rather expensive probably due to the transportation costs ! for example - Frontline is around HK$185; Greenies 450g on sales is HK$100; Small Dog beanbag is around HK$600. In North America these stuff seems to be cheaper !

if you need more information or want a local person to help you get around here in HK, you can email me at soulhkg@yahoo.co.uk so that I can provide you my personal contact info !
