Has anyone had any experience getting Ikea to design and install a kitchen for them? Im wondering about the quality of instilation and materials.Private contractoes have quoted me much higher prices and im sure this isn't soley due to the materials they use. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

From checking out US websites, this sounds like a very feasible route, just google around. I actually tried this but in the end, decided against it. Here's why:
Our contractor kept putting down IKEA quality, workmanship, etc. however unless you're looking at Italian or German cabinets, I don't believe there's much difference in the quality personally, since they (IKEA and local made) would be made in China anyways. In fact many contractors now don't do kitchens, they subcontract them out to specialized kitchen shops (loads in Wan Chai) where you can see for yourself what the difference is between cabinets that the standard contractor can provide vs. a "specialized" kitchen cab supplier. Anyways, back to IKEA:
I paid for the site visit, and did have to follow up as they did not get back to me as promised. No biggie, they had a proposal for me anyways, and after scheduling an appt, they reviewed with me, offering many good suggestions and workarounds.
However, bottom line is, and this would be the case for many "pre-fab" cabinets, you will have most luck if your kitchen is a straight line galley or L. Otherwise, if you have a U kitchen (as I do), or if you have too many nooks/crannies (guilty again), the IKEA cabinets won't fit and would have to be modded to work. My contractor was willing to add a customised piece at the end, say, to even it out, and add internal reinforcements where stability could be affected (say if the back of the cabinet was cut out to accomodate an uneven wall), but in the end I decided it was more trouble than it was worth.
Anyways, YMMV, good luck! I still think they are the way to go if your particular layout allows it!

Vantastic: I would really be interested to see your pics, best of luck!
I didn't find IKEA that expensive, relatively speaking, I think that depends on who you are comparing them to. We went to a place in Mong Kok where every floor was a "kitchen specialist", and they were *cheap*, but questionaable quality and limited choices. When I compare IKEA to the Lockart Road (st level) shops, they came out cheaper.
Also, IKEA offers corian-type countertops now, but not with built-in sinks - I remember I asked if they would still honor the warranty on the cabinets if I bought the countertop elsewhere, and I seem to remember the answer was no....

Renovations are nearing the end now, after 4+ months.... Lots of pictures, but no energy to put a blog together!

Saikunga: just give it a wipe now and then, no problems so far. I guess it depends more on what your countertop is made of..?

Hmmm, if you have a joint, then either it is laminate or stone, I gather. Instead of using a seperate draining board, you could choose one that is integrated with your sink, most likely the sink would be stainless steel. In my research into countertops for our kitchen, I've come to appreciate there is a whole world of countertop options out there! To say nothing about sinks...

I used Ikea to do the kitchen fittings for me.
For 7 different types of cupboards, installation of sink and putting them into somewhere with awkward spaces, it cost just over 17K. They managed to get in done in 13 hours.
However, their sink units are not great, especially the dranage space as it's so small. I frequently have to wipe them dry even when I'm still washing up. And it leaks!

Sing Sing, Do u mean the sinks themselves are not deep enough? Or are u refering to the base cabinet that the sink fits on top of? I'm not sure where u are need ing to dry it up. Re: leaks, that should be covered under warranty, right??

The actual drainage area as it only just fits one full-sized dinner plate. Any water runoff runs off onto the counter unit, hence you have to wipe it dry. Try and get a bigger sized sink if you can, too.
