I am selling my flat in HK and using the solictor recommended by the real estate agent. Trouble is, I am not a HK resident and this solicitor is insisting I travel to HK to sign the legal docs. This is just not possible in next few weeks due to work & family commitments. I just purchased a property in UK and all docs were signed, witnessed & couriered - I did not have to go to UK at all. Anyone know if this is possible in HK or failing that, if I can appoint a HK resident as Power of Attorney.
Please reply asap! Thx.

You certainly can sign a Power of Attorney to effect the sale. Costs for such documentation will typically range HK$3,000.

Thank you for the replies. I have changed lawyers and am arranging a PoA. It turns out that under HK law, if I can't sign in front of a HK lawyer, I need to go to a lawyer in the country I'm living, sign the docs, then get them notarised in front of the Chinese Consulate - not easy!! To save the hassle of that, I'm coming to HK once to sign PoA, then my PoA will sign on my behalf for the completion of sale (thereby saving me one trip...) Just posting this in case anyone else needs the same info. The legal process is certainly more complicated than that in the UK and that does surprise me..........!

from my previous expereince never ever use lawyer recomended by real estate agent. I have very bad expereince and suffering from it. the lawyer should be working for my interest but in my case, the agent and lawyer knew about order from government for illiagle structure and knowing they both of them had hidden from me. I am fighting the case but deal has been already completed and full payment has been made. for convienenc and saving of small cost never ever compromise on the lawyer always use your own trusted one.
