You may be better off finding a small flat, as in REAL small, and renting it yourself. As long as you have the money for the deposit, I think you should be able to find something in the Sheung Wan/Sai Ying Pun area for around the same price as a single room at the Helena May.

Almost like the idea of couchsurfing except that you pay. They have cheap options. Monthly charges could work out a lot cheaper than Helena May, but you will be hard pressed to find something real cheap in the Hong Kong island side.
(Sorry, without knowing what your salary is, for example, its hard to tell, 30-40K per month could be "low" to some but could be supporting a family of 4 in another instance)
