Dating - hanging out with one opposite sex doing friendly stuff but with a mutual interest of taking the “friendship” a bit further.
Relationship – upgrading the “dating” status by adding in the “love” factor. Getting more emotionally involved and completely reveal yourself to your partner.
BP - what do you say?

Hrm... for me...
Dating:
spending time together, some foreplay, but not sex, and no exclusivity (you can date other people)
Relationship:
Includes sex, and is exclusive (no longer dating anyone else)
But I think these are very subjective definitions and will vary from person to person. Hence, when you start dating someone, you should discuss these things so that both of you are clear about the expectations.

BP - you sound very dissapointed to discover that you are in a relationship... why?

Hmmmm, it's a wonder they don't teach this sort of thing in school. Would help some of the confused souls on this site.
Relationship - if you have to ask then you're not in one.
Ditto for sex, lol!

I have been in a few "directionless" relationships. Those that were fun, but where I knew in my heart this was not the person to spend the rest of my life with. However, the amount of enjoyment I got from the relationship still far exceeded the amount of hassle or frustration.
I was more accepting of this type of relationship in my 20's. Now firmly into my 30's, I'd rather be single than in a directionless relationship.

Ahhhh so true. In your 20's you have all the time in the world to spend on 'unsuitable men'. And why not, it's fun.
Suddenly you hit 30 and it's all downhill from there - dinner parties, joint bank accounts, mortgages and babygro's. Sigh......
I'd give anything for a directionless relationship, lol!
Onlyme - I am a bit harsh at times but it's for their own good, lol.

Berrypicker - I really despair of you sometimes. I was making a joke at the general amount of insecurity on this website. My comments were not pointed at you.
Sorry if you feel I am harsh towards you. I think the only time we have disagreed on this website is over some comments you made about yourself ie. give yourself a break.

Do you mean that once you know that a person is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, you'd direct your relationship to ...the marriage?

Wildorchid... I have been in several relationships where I enjoyed the time... but I never really saw marriage at the end of the tunnel (so to speak).
Whereas in ONE relationship, that lasted 2.5 years, as soon as we started dating, I had the feeling that this was the girl for me. Talk of marriage and kids seemed exciting, not scary!
Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but i remember the feeling... and it was unlike any of the other relationships in my life. I hope to find it again someday. :)

4 years old?????? How did you even understand the concept of taking your own life at that age?

Cyber, So what do guys mean when they say to their girls that they want to spend the rest of their life with her but they still don't want to get married? They say marriage is just a piece of paper.

Or maybe you were looking for attention.

Wildorchid... i suppose for some guys, the commitment is the important part, the marriage certificate is truly just a piece of paper. Others place a strong significance on the wedding ceremony and vows... for those people, the wedding itself is a very important event. There is no right answer, just depends on the people involved i think.
