Lying about smoking

ORIGINAL POST

My b/fs are adults so they are fully aware of what they are doing. Furthermore, they should have the freedom to choose weather to smoke or not. My current b/f is a heavy smoker but he has no pressure from my side. Just time to time send him some scientific info/news regarding the harms smoking brings about.

WildOrchid - you should purchase some fags from Singapore!! They are covered in pictures of babies dying and horrid things like that - it nearly worked to stop me for the weekend but I was too drunk to focus on the piccies (thank goodness!)

On another note - I started going out with this lovely bloke just before New Year and he mentioned quitting on the 2nd Jan, so I thought I would support him and do the same. It was a good idea to do it on the 2nd, because you could get over your hangover without guilt that you were breaking the resolution so early on in the year!!

I did brilliantly, totally stopped (had the energy of being flushed with new love and passion for this guy). Then a few weeks after - he admitted to me he hadn't stopped at all!!

Bastard!

I really enjoy smoking, but I was so angry that i didn't start again!!

I carried on feeling very virtuous....

saying that though, I am smoking again - things just got too bad this year.

But I am going to stop again on the 2nd... anyone willing to join me in this venture???

So you did manage to stop completely ? Hmmm honestly so far I have managed to reduce only to 1 fag a day.

Going back to the topic. If the smoker smokes when his second half is not around, not in the flat or brush violently his teeth before kissing. Everything is fine. Quite difficult to stop smoking, especially when you are stressed and/or you go out often.

One friend quit smoking with the following method : one week before quiting he would smoke so much that the taste of cigarette makes him sick. And then he took a week off (in France you have more holidays than working days) and jogg for one hour each time he would feel up for a cigarette. Let's call it the mad smoker technic, I am sure there are less panzer method to stop.

That is so true!!!

The other worry about stopping is that I'll put weight on because I'll snack instead of smoke and the jogging thing wouldn't work because as I run I am sure I get shorter!!!(pounding myself into the road etc etc!)

JC - have to say, you seem to be doing really well on your health kick!!

Inspiration for us all.....:)

Hated smoking, quitting was one of the best things I ever did. After many unsuccessful attempts I did a four-hour stop smoking course and never touched a ciggie again. Having tried many times to stop before I think part of lying about smoking is about admitting failure. Good luck jc.

Well i stopped on friday and im still doing great and amazingly all the problems i was have with insomnia and digestion have dissapeared. durrrr....

im sure that putting in extra toxins in Hong Kong is gunna mess anyone up. Ahh the relief, back in Leeds with wonderful fresh air, no smoking and the spar just down the road. Im gunna get so bored soon though and want to smoke again. No way Im going strong I wont smoke again, it makes my teeth brown, makes me smell, f* up my digestion, makes me irritable (when i cant lol) and makes those non smokers think i have no self control.

Its a real bad habbit but a pure f* to beat...i tried over and over but failed so many times.

Its only because it was making me so sick that i may have the strength to suceeed now.

I told myself to quit over and over, but never asked myself why i was doing it so much?

I used to get so stressed about doing it when i wanted to giv up that i would smoke ten times as many....i would smoke 3 in a row when i knew my anti-smoker BF was on his wayhome!!! Thats how smoking became a toxin for my body...i know it is anyway but seriously if you stress too much about quiting when your really not ready then you smoke more and get more stressed and smoke more and more until it makes you sick...LOL So all you smokers out there...if you wanna give up, take it easy on yourself....if you are around a man who repeatedly gets at you for smoking, tell him to F* off...by nagging you they are really making matters worse.

Both of my last BF nagged me so much about smoking that i went from a girlie who had one afterbreakfast, dinner and tea to .....having 3 before breakfast, 4 before they arrived and several after they left...i'd jam in those cigarettes before they came to ensure i wouldnt smoke whilst they were with me cos i knew i would be in so much sh*t! Sad state of affairs, messed me up big time!

I realise now that i found it so hard to give up because i was being pressurised into giving it up and felt a failure when i had one cigarette which in turn made the smoke i had not a stress relief but instead a stress hinderance...ahhhh how messed up is that! LOL

I wish that i had never started when i was 16.

two things i should like to add....lol

1) You wont gain weight just change your diet when you quit

2) The weaning method does work, i stuck on three a day for about a year. Problem was i never managed to get off the cigs though as that just gave me another little routine.

Right now im afraid to go to the spar..lol....i know they will be looking at me, but if i see them im gunna say 'F* off'. The cravings are insane, alongside the jetlag (lol) but i just bought a sh*t load of fruit and will live off stirfrys and healthy food whilst my fat metab is low (hehe) Plus i joined the gymn yesturday

It is very hard to stop. A lot of people smoke, and once you started, then you are in the gang. Other smokers invite you for a puff, or smoke in front of you. So you feel very tempted. But of course why should they stop smoking for you right ?

One thing I have noticed though : it is when you feel peaceful that you don't feel that need for a stick. So it is probably not relevant to stop when you are in a stressful period or not ready. It will just be a failure.

Anyway no harm to try.

Going back to the topic, I went on a date and quite liked the girl. So I did not smoke. On the second date, she looked at me a bit hesitating and finally said : do you mind if I smoke, I really like to smoke in bars. We were both hidding from eachother !!! We ended up like 2 addicts enjoying our stick raaahhh.

But how else could you do : smoking is a big deal breaker. When you like someone, you make an effort. It is just right. And you will clean your mess in the backyard. Smoking I believe is only temporary, you can change that state. Finding someone you really like could just be the right reason, amongst others to stop. So nothing wrong right ?

My b/f now is a HEAVY smoker and I am the complete anti-smoker. How does that work? Don't ask me...but it does.

He never lied about it and smokes around me, but he is MUCH more considerate than some smokers I know. He admitted, as The Bear said, that when I am around, his smoking is less than when I am not.

I have asked G if he would ever quit and he said when he dies. Nice. I don't send him annoying literature about the hazards. He knows them. He suffers through my rants about inconsiderate smokers in HK on the streets and he knows how passionately I feel about being a non-smoker.

The irony in all this is that I have prolly spent more on Tabacco at duty free in the past 2 years than anything else. Sheesh. I am an enabler. Dang.

So, let's imagine you are dating a guy that you really like and then bang ! One day you discover he was smoking, but was hidding it from you.

How would you react :

1 - Dump him

2 - Try to convince him to stop

3 - Simply accept who he is and just ask him not to smoke around you ?

Well JC,

Today we live in a society where we have to fit in an image. We are surrounded by images of perfect people : good looking, healthy, successful with a great smile, great friends... But we are just average blokes, with our lot of tiny imperfections, very human. And we try so hard to comply to this image and also expect others to comply to that image. It is a pressure, and some people feel insecure because they do not fit in the profile. Hence lying : wearing black clothes, contact lenses, avoiding smoking, flashing a credit card when we eat rice at home ...

Do you know that renting car business is very succesful for luxury cars in HK : apparently some guys rent a porche for a week end, just to impress their girl. See how far this goes.

Hey, first rule is to love and accept ourselves. Anyway ...

I would have to agree. For all the people i know who lied to their parents for years in High school about smoking....yeah....right.

Acceptance is the key. I am not thrilled that G smokes, but it is who he is at the moment and since I love him, it take it in stride.

Smoking is a habit and addictive but with a lot of will power can be stopped. It is not a personality trait.
