Anything that i consider even remotely unacceptable is now ending up in a ban. This rubbish is only making work for me and I have enough to do already.
And before you complain or tell me I am sinking the AX business, our HK traffic has gone from 220,000 to way over 300,000 unique visitors since January... so save the emails and comments....

Ed, hate to state the obvious but if you ban some of your best customers who actually do attract alot of other customers and lure back a few old ones then surely your traffic will start sinking?... oops there goes this thread.

I do not consider someone who constantly breaks the rules one of our best members - volume of posts on the forums does not necessarily = quality.
As indicated our HK site has well over 300,000 unique visitors and our network is approaching 700,000 uniques/month.
Over the years we have seen a direct correlation between higher participation on the forums when we remove those who constantly post unacceptable commments...
And further to that, the forums although an important resource for people to get answers (hence the reason why we are dissuading anyone who tries to use them for anything but providing constructive comments), they are nowhere near the busiest section of the site...
There will be no let up in our monitoring/censorship/banning policy on the forums - for every person that we ban there are at least 10 others who feel more comfortable participating on them (we get plenty of positive comments when we ban people - and we also get loads of help pointing out unacceptable comments that get missed).
Feel free to participate but please do so in a constructive manner.

So thee prefers quality over quantity then quotes amounts... I could agree with your statistics that when concerning the removal of unacceptable comments does make the forum more approachable but I fail to grasp what exactly the policy is for a forum based on relationships... especially considering that most of the banned parties abide by the rules and refrain from using naughty words and thus sometimes the innuendos are lost in translation. When petty name calling is involved I think the poster should be banned but friendly banter not but that is just my humble opinion...
So back to the topic and please can you keep this thread alive as I think it is important to all involved.
Thus please can you possibly enlighten us to what is OK and what is not... one example was from a new 'unique' visitor who wanted and appreciated advice concerning her relationship specifically concerned that her partner was looking at porn. This topic is acceptable in 'women's only' forum re: http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/womenonly/threads/82253.asp
but is unacceptable for 'relationships'. It may have helped this poster to have had a male opinion and was probably why she felt 'relationships' a better forum to post such a sensitive topic. The poster actually positively responed to the light hearted banter concerning her situation and helped her deal with an issue she could not discuss elsewhere.
Please can you state to all what is the allowed to be discussed concerning 'relationships' and what is not. We are all trying to be constructive but I hope you will appreciate that opinions differ which is why many of your posters need a second, third, fourth et all opinion, good or bad, pros vs cons, this happened to me, et infinitum.
Guidelines please... no-one here wants to cause offense to anyone at all.
Thanking you in advance.

Ed, I understand and appreciate what you're trying to do. But you do really 'overban' sometimes.I have seen forums that are too lax and then it degenerates into utter rubbish.I have stopped visiting those forums because no one ever keeps to the topic.
But, what we need is a happy medium.Without some idle banter AsiaXpat is becoming quite a bore.
Perhaps you can create a forum for 'Idle chatter and rubbish' where all the borderline-unacceptable posts (according to your judgement)can go to.

well, this is not a "Free" forum, thats it.
We better find a friend to talk to when we have problems.
May be all this complains and bannings make the traffic goes! :)))

Ed -- how's this for a reasonable compromise -- create a new area -- The Sewer -- and consign all the "rubbish" as you put it to there. Threads that go haywire or people that can't keep a serious tone. All those people that look like they are enjoying themselves. Edit it with a far lighter hand, if u feel u have to edit it at all. It could also be a sort of halfway hosue to total banning for those who are mucking about. Essentially Ed, I know u want to keep these threads serious, but why not factor in a playground for all the idiots, that way everyone is happy

Hows this for an idea - you create a new web site called www.thesewer.com.hk Allow anything - racism, profanity, sleeze, libel etc....
Lets see how long it takes you to end up like this site that did exactly that....
http://www.icered.com/index.jsp
Never in a million years will you see a forum of this nature on AsiaXPAT. And anyone attempting to push a thread or forum into the sewer will themselves end up in the sewer...
This is a business and a serious resource for mature people - idiots are not welcome

Jester: we break revenue and profit records pretty much every quarter... I wont divulge numbers but watch for our TVC spots on the Spanish Grand Prix and the FA Cup Final this weekend...
Cathy - the reason the entire threads go is because sometimes when we check them they are so rife with rubbish it takes too much time to read through and cull the crap. By enforcing no warnings that should put an end to this because the moment we see a comment that breaks a rule, we not only delete we ban the member.

Banned and that entire thread has been takend down because its gone too far in the wrong direction. If I were to remove the cancerous comments that riddled it then the entire thread would make no sense to it all goes... feel free to start the question again.

how about this way? Leave the thread title on so people know what has been banned...It seems so many threads in "relationships" has been deleted!

Hi Ed, I have wondered how much time it takes you to scroll through so many threads, you must be a patient man or woman??? I agree with your comments. However the idea mentioned above about marking the thread as deleted, would be a great idea, plus if anything it will give a clear example of what is acceptable and what isn't. Yes I know normally it would be classed as common sense but not everyone is equal regarding this life essential quality. I am sure this would be very easily automated with some sort of macro.
Anyway just my pennies worth,
Cheers

I am not the only one monitoring the forums - we also have to review all classifieds before they go to the site so all told its probably a couple of man hours/day involved...
We are on here pretty much around the clock making sure nobody spoils the forums for others - just checked all the forums for the Bangkok airport on way back from Laos... I hear a typhoon is headed for HK - apparently i should have stayed in Laos a bit longer...

Ed... apologies for making it personal but I have had some abuse of late and hope that my therapy has been noted.
i speak for a dear person closer to my heart and ask foriveness and can she be allowed parole soon...
i know you are under pressure but... 7 dasy is 7 days desune...
and if not then nande? a bottom feeder is punished, a snorkal deleted, yet a slur to being a slut in a derogative way acceptable? I have never insulted anyone on this site, yes maybe made people question or form an opinion or made silly observations but is that not what a debate is about?
I can agree to disagree but want not to have to endure attacks at an opinion validated visually by others.
No point to this post no question to ask nor advise only that I do not like nor wish to continue to be abused by some, banned by others and yet apprecited by more but guantity not quality.
Oh and nande translates to 'why?"... Aijin and Keimochi if you do not know then maybe Santa will present you or vice versa...
Ed: good work and I do not envy your task but wood trees and many may well agree...
oh and I do not wish any poster to be excluded for are highly vaiid and informative...
this post is just something that other friends in exile have noted. And observed and maybe indeed you have seen that if no opinion then no response... but ad co. I am not anymore wanting or needing but still as I do indeed know nothing and need no validtion but know that the good consellers know and thus i am not your client nor worthy clientele.
Good luck HK and Xpat and if you ever need to feeel to ask for anothers opinion then I wish you all well..
