Sounds like we're talking business, but in this relationship department, what are the painless, graceful ways of ending it with someone that you don't really see a future with? Would you remain friends, or a little more than friends like sex buddies with no futher emotion devotions or expectations, or acting like you've never known each other, or ... Food for thoughts.

when you say you want to be friends, it's just bs really?!! It's just a way saying" oh well, let's just be civil adults and not pretend we don't know each other when we bump into each other on the street..." .. Really depend how ugly the break up is and how involved you are emtionally with this person....

Ending it? Simple... just have a talk with the other person on why it's not working out, then go. DON'T CLING. DON'T LOOK BACK. Just go cold turkey, keep yourself busy and meet new people. In 2-3 months, these would have just been another storm in a teacup.

Two of my ex's are close friends. They way I look at it, if they are good enough to be a GF/BF, then the same qualities make them good friends. If all you were interested was sex, then you shouldn't got into a relationship in the first place.
Having said that, remain just friends. Never even kissed an ex after I broke up. Rarely have dinner with them except in a group situation. It also makes it easier for mutual friends so that they don't have them choose sides ( an added side benefit).

If you were friends before the realtionship, and share the same social circles, it makes sense to go back to being friends.
If you were strangers before and hooked up, then off the hook means probably not being friends, but being civil. As Greenisle suggested.
