I've been in Asia for 3 years. Just moved to Singapore after 2 years in Hong Kong. One thing I still can't figure out is why girls here break dates so often. Seems to be even worse in Singapore.
The Top 3 excuses are I get are :
1. Boss Roped Me Into Something at Last Minute.
2. Sick
3. The 3C's - Colleague, Classmate, Co-workwer invited them to do something.
Where I come from, If you break a date its not a good thing. Westerners tend to keep their comitments. In America, if a girl breaks the first date, you DO NOT ask her out again. But here it seems to be coincidental and open for a later date.
I'd like to hear comments from both guys and girls on this issue. I really don't know when to believe them. I realise these can be legitimate reasons but how to tell when they are lying?

Hi handsumfrend, I also dating with westerners
in HK but I never break dates. Except I feel
really sick. When you said 'often', that mean
how many ??

Often enough that I see a pattern. In HK it was about 50% of the girls would do it. But in Singapore its more like 90%. Its not that I dont end up dating them, in fact Ive had more than 1 do this to me, then fall in love with me after we dated a while. my problem is one of frustration in that i end up wasting time and losing other opportunities. and also, trying to weed out the ones who just arent really interested from the ones that are. perhaps i should adopt a policy of double booking all my appointments and cancelling one myself at the last minute. im sure thats what many girls do. isnt that part of "The Game"?

Hi handsumfrend,
Im sorry for that. Im a Chinese girl too and
I never break dates like this. In case if Im
not interesting with that guy, I'll told him
directly. Because I dont want to wasting
their time and that is what I do. Im very
sure that I dont like to play this kind of
games. But I have no ideas about another
Chinese girls, and I dont know what are they
thinking too.
But Im sure not all the Chinese girls are
like that.

Here's the shocker. I've dated over 150 girls in the 3 years i've been in asia. You seem to never have dated much or not at all!

What are you trying to say?

Its either one of two things there not interested or there playing a game.

Thanks for all your replies. Especially you aspect. Although I had a hard time following the last post.
To some degree you are all missing the point. What i'm trying to understand is this. What are the reasons for breaking the dates, true or contrived. And, if they are playing a game, then whats the game and why?

well, simply not interested.

exactly. not interested. but don't want to let you down when you ask.

i think main point is that if a girl breaks a date once, i think you can try to ask her again. if she still has some reasons for not coming, then move on. if she really likes you, she will ask you out herself the next time.

I have also had this problem. Both with the cancelled dates and the tardiness. And it's not about "not interested", at least not all the time. Soemtimes even in a platonic friendship this happens. And when they're 2 hours late sometimes not even so much as a "sorry".
People in Hong Kong, especially women (I'm not being sexist, just stating my experience), seem to think that being perpetually late or cancelling plans at the last minute is acceptable. It's not.
It's gotten to the point that I call one day in advance and then again two hours in advance to confirm the appointment.

haven't heard about that before (SG vs HK) girls breaking dates. Based on the figures you gave and your handle- I can only guess that the SG girls are more discerning but are too polite to say NO in yout face.
If you've 'dated' so many girls before you'd realise that a high failure rate means you're doing something wrong. (looks wise, personality wise, materially??)
(And NO I am not Singaporean)

We're not really generalizing here. I don't see anyone here saying *all* HK/SG women are like this. Do you? What we're saying is that it's more common here than it is in other places.
"To U All,
Stop generalising Asian girls please. It all depends on different people regardless of nationality. I am a gal from HK (though educated in overseas) and have never done above-mentioned things in my life, as I do agree that being chicken out for meetings/dates without any reasonable reasons is pretty rude."
