mess with boss - what was he thinking?

My boss is noted for being a devoted family man in his office, he is a very tall handsome man, married with small children. We have known each other for two years. As we work in different countries, we have telephone twice a month, email occasionaly see each other approx. every quarter. Our communication is limited coz I'm very much on my own to run my job, and it's not high on his agenda. I don't really know him very well, though I met his family and toured with them when they came to my country for vacation.

A few days ago, we had conference of his whole team, dinner & drinks... he was a bit hammered, I was tipsy myself too, after we said good night, he followed me to my room, asked if I wanted to watch movie or something, I said I don't have any movies in my room, then he walked away. The next day he apologized that he just wanted to talk to someone after drinking. I didn't think there was anything for him to apologize for.

Now I am pondering what was he thinking when he followed me and knocked at my door?

a) he just wanted to talk to me like he said?

b) or have a fling?

For the record, my boss is a very talkive person. I don't know what could be C, discussion on my career path? If it's B, how could a man with such good reputation of being family man think of messing with his direct report?

mpl, thanks, I won't break my brain by thinking about it. Actually I still think he is a good man.

He wanted to try his luck. When men want to talk in the bedroom, it means "SEX".

You might consider a strategy for your next dinner out. Some suggestions:

Make other friends at dinner, preferrably female. Leave when that other person leaves - not when your boss leaves.

Leave with the second-to-last person - whoever they are. There is no practical reason for you to be alone at night with a married man. Any unfinished business conversations can be resolved the next day or over a conference call.

Leave something with the concierge before dinner begins. You have to pick it up before you return to your room. As the concierge to provide you with an escort back to your room. It's amazing how one can forget a room number when he/she becomes tipsy :).
