It doesn't have to be a material article -how about a show/restraunt evening, with a few things sprinkled in that you know he'd like eh?

as a guy I totaly agree with carlover
it is not the gift that matter it is the gesture
of being given something, I am sure he wil be happy whatever you buy him. but "fish" around and ask indirect what he like and enjoy doing.
if you are already a couple and been for some times I am sure you already knows most of his intrests.
for myself I would be more happy if you bake him a cake than you go buy him a cake, make a pillow or something like that.
I would of course not be unhappy if someone give em a DVD if she knowd I collect DVD movies, but if I already have 600 DVD movies I would be more happy if I get something I woould not buy for myself norlamy...cloths, men hate shop cloths
something diffrent so he can see you have done something special for him
same reason why I never buy a chocolat box as a present is be cause it is so easy and normal gift, even is there is nothing wrong give chochat and most women realy like it, but it is no crativite behind it, I rather take a risk and buy her something I dont know she like or not.
it dont have to be useful or expensive, just something funny and odd.
my last gift was a tomato shaped box to put coinsavings, it had humanface and showed the touge and pointed finger at you, I know she wont use it to save coins in it, even less to put in her bookself, but it was a good laugh when she opened it and she was happy about it.
use you imagenation and I am sure he will be happy..good luck

Yup, watch is for sure a good option. However, it is quite costly. I want to get a present for my new boyfriend who is for sure not materialistic at all. The problem is I don’t have much extra money at the moment. I have bought him shirts, cologne and shoes already. I cant buy him funny items as his apartment is very tiny and guess something practical will be better? As such, any suggestions?

How about a compass?
I sure wish someone would give me a decent compass!
Never brought mine when moved to HK and find it difficult in the car with all the curly roads, especially on Kowloon side - heading in the right direction would be comforting, even if not on the desired road!
Yeah, a compass would be nice.......

A compass? That’s a very special idea I do have a compass for hiking.
I cant get him a compass because he doesn’t drive here.
I can get you one though if you really want that. it’s a very special idea and I would love to give you a favour you know where to get it, don’t you?
car lover, I guess I wont get anything from the sex shop…simply because I will for sure be too shy to buy that. lol.
Let me think, something funny?! I am too serious so always think of something practical. Let me try to shop for something interesting …

Find out from his mum his favourite food/recipe from when he was a child. And then make it for him.

My budget is very tight this month…can only afford something around $200 to $300.

He is 28 and I don’t see he wearing any accessories…he is quite a simple guy.
He just moved to HK and so I don’t know his mom yet and don’t really know what’s his favourite dish…
Well, suddenly just think of getting a backpack for him? Or a bag for his work? But $300 seems not enough for a work bag.

Doesn't matter if he drives or not, he needs at least a pocket compass.
All you need do is go out the wrong MTR exit in Causeway Bay or Mong Kok and your doomed!
"always talking about brand names" does not sound healthy for a balanced guy sorry to say - sounds a bit girly/materialistic/easily influenced - sorry but that is my informed and experienced opinion on guys who bang on about brand names

Tiger 01, I guess he is not in need of a compass at the moment as his office is in walking distance and he is a home person. If we go hiking, I can be a good guide and he wont get lost :)
Kopfan, thanks for your kind offer. He is a very simple expat who doesn’t really care about materialistic stuff. He’s got an ipod together with his computer. He is currently using a bag given by the company as a free gift…it’s useful but not very presentable and so I would like to get him a new bag/ backpack for his work. However, I seldom shop for guys’ stuff so not sure if I can get a good one with the $300 budget.
I know he needs a new cell phone as his current one is half-broken…but just it’s not affordable for me at the moment.

Well it will be the Year of the Pig soon. How about a share of a pig ($200) through Heifer HK. A share of a goat or sheep is cheaper. And a flock of chickens, ducks or geese is $200. Not only is it a perfect gift for a 'non-materialistic' person - it's certainly a gift to remember!

If u can increase ur budget to 400$, then go to ICE jewellery shops (by lukfook jewellers), they have stainless steel cufflinks, very decent n good. They also have steel rings n other accessories for men, at reasonable rates.
Goodluck.

Entire HK is "on final sale", go window shopping and you might all the sudden find sth. right! I am always happy about a nice T-shirt with a special motive on it. Or a beach shirt. This he will wear for a long time and remembers you. That is if he likes it..Sun glasses..what are his hobbies? He is homely..home or window decoration? He works in an office..some nice stationary? Sooo much choice...

how about presenting yourself as a gift? that's exactly what i did for my bf at x'mas.

and oh, btw, do it at home please.

Thanks everyone for your brilliant ideas. I start having more ideas. Thank you.
Shweta, did you mean Icg? Do you know where can I find the shops? I cant recall they have any shops in Kln side.
Pinolino, I cant tell what’s his hobbies or he will know that I am talking about him here :) he enjoys staying at home and it seems that he doesn’t really need any stationary for his work…
Maybe I can buy him a set of new bed sheet and quilt cover? will it be too practical?
