Why Do Men Buy Sex?

ORIGINAL POST

* n the U.S., police officers detained about 78,000 people in 2007 for prostitution-related crimes, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Only about 10 percent of these arrests are of the sex patrons, who almost exclusively are men.

* A considerable proportion of men worldwide buy sex from female prostitutes, with most estimates of lifetime prevalence ranging from 7 to 39 percent, depending on the country and study. Many experts argue that it is a male appetite—and not the choices of prostitutes—that fundamentally drives the sex trade.

* Men’s motives for buying sex are hotly contested among researchers. Some believe the practice serves as a salve for common psychological afflictions, such as an unfulfilled craving for sex or romance. Others, meanwhile, paint a dimmer portrait of johns, believing they are driven by chauvinistic motives, such as a desire to dominate and control women.

Arthur is an alleged john, a man who patronizes prostitutes. After his arrest on September 5, 2008, a photograph of this 41-year-old appeared on the Web site of the Chicago Police Department. Arthur (not his real name) was far from the only person so branded on this Internet portal. Samuel, 59, and José, 34, (whose names were also changed to protect their privacy) were on this online pillory for a month after their September 5 arrests.

The apprehensions of Arthur, Samuel, José and many others represent the huge demand among males for prostitutes. In the U.S., police officers detained about 78,000 people in 2007 for prostitution-related crimes, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Experts believe that about 10 percent of these arrests are of the sex patrons, almost all of whom are men.

Overall, an estimated 16 percent of men pay for sex in the U.S., according to a 2005 report by social work professor Sven-Axel Månsson of Malmö University in Sweden. And a study published in 2000 of 998 street prostitutes and 83 call girls in Los Angeles led by sociologist Janet Lever of California State University, Los Angeles, suggests that 28 percent of men who patronize prostitutes and nearly half of those who employ call girls buy sex regularly, with the rest being occasional customers.

The proportion of patrons seems to vary considerably by country and by study. Månsson reported that 14 percent of Dutch men have bought sex as compared with nearly 40 percent of men in Spain. (Prostitution is legal in both countries.)

And according to HYDRA, a Berlin-based organization that provides legal advice and other aid to prostitutes, up to three quarters of men in Germany, which also has legalized prostitution, have paid for sexual services. Meanwhile other estimates for Germany put the proportion far lower, at about one fifth. In Thailand, where prostitution is illegal but socially accepted, one study suggested that a whopping 95 percent of men have slept with a prostitute.

Whatever the numbers, the behavior is prevalent enough that psychologists cannot easily write it off as pathological. Rather men’s motives for buying sex are hotly contested among researchers. Some believe the practice serves as a salve for common psychological afflictions, such as an unfulfilled appetite for sex, love or romance. Others paint a dimmer portrait of johns, believing they are typically driven by chauvinistic motives, such as a desire to dominate and control women. A similar debate rages among experts about the morality of prostitution itself.

Basic Instinct

Of course, the simplest explanation for men buying sex is that they like it. After all, people are generally willing to pay for activities they enjoy as much as they do sex. On the other hand, a man can usually get sex for free in the context of an ordinary intimate relationship. So why pay good money for it, especially given the social and health risks of having sex with a prostitute? Are all johns so unappealing that they cannot get sex any other way?

Most researchers do not think so. Johns come from all socioeconomic classes, according to culture researcher Sabine Grenz of Humboldt University of Berlin. They may be stockbrokers, truck drivers, teachers, priests or law-enforcement officials. Many are married with children. “There are no social characteristics that basically distinguish johns from other men,” says Grenz, who published her interviews with a large number of johns in a 2005 book.

Nor are these men defined by obvious personality problems. In a survey published in 1994 psychologist Dieter Kleiber of the Free University of Berlin had some 600 johns fill out the Freiburg Personality Inventory and found no particular abnormalities. The only correlations he found applied to risk taking and unprotected sex. For example, the men who demanded sex without condoms tended to score higher on aggression, and married and well-to-do customers practiced unprotected sex more frequently than others did. “The more secure and orderly a man’s life is, the more he believes in his own invulnerability,” Kleiber concludes.

The research underscores the diversity of the men who pay for sex. Accordingly, these individuals seek prostitutes for varied reasons. Some of them may indeed be driven purely by sexual impulse. In a study of johns sponsored by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, sociologist Udo Gerheim of Bremen, Germany, found that many of these men are either sexually frustrated (because they are not getting satisfying sex elsewhere) or hedonists who want to live out their erotic fantasies in a red-light setting.

Representatives of HYDRA similarly say that men go to prostitutes to appease a sexual appetite. Many men feel freer to experiment within the context of commercial sex than with their wives or girlfriends, enabling them to expand their sexual range and to experience greater sexual fulfillment.

Fee for Romance?

Yet some researchers have identified emotional and psychological motivations among the men who purchase sex. Gerheim spotted a type of romantic john who imagines that he is having a genuine relationship with a prostitute based on mutual trust. Kleiber also saw a romantic streak in many of his interviewees. These men, Kleiber explains, seem to be pursuing the ideal of love in a fee-for-service setting.

When Kleiber and his colleagues asked johns to characterize their prostitutes, most rated them as “charming” and “open.” Some also said these women were “intelligent” and “witty.” Many of the men painted a picture of a perfect woman whom they would like to get to know better. A few even penned statements such as “I can easily imagine the prostitute to whom I go as my wife.” “These men have emotionally charged relationships with prostitutes,” Kleiber says. They portray these relationships as intimate despite their commercial nature and limited scope, he adds.

The behavior of male customers during their encounters with prostitutes also may suggest that they seek a social connection outside of coitus. From her interviews with Los Angeles prostitutes, Lever learned that purchasers of sex often ask indiscreet questions such as “Where do you come from?” or “Is Lara your real name?” before and after the act.

As if to continue their “relationship,” many if not most johns prefer to go back to the same prostitute over and over again. According to Kleiber’s study, more than two thirds of devotees used the services of a particular prostitute more than 50 times. One in four had sex with the same prostitute more than 100 times.

But why would a man turn to a prostitute—as opposed to a girlfriend, wife or other consensual female lover—to satisfy his need for a social bond? One reason may be that real relationships with women are risky and complicated, features that men do not always want and cannot always handle. Prostitutes are far less exacting than girlfriends and wives and may even be soothing to the psyche.

That is, an ordinary female date might reject a man or happen to be tired, distant or not in the mood. In contrast, sex workers generally accept their customers unconditionally and offer intimacy on demand, whatever their true feelings, says gender researcher Gunda Schumann, who co-authored a 1980 book on the psychology of prostitution. “They offer the men emotional involvement, psychic stability and empathy,” she observes. In this view, ordinary men buy sex to deal with their psychological insecurities as well as their sexual needs.

The idea that sex with a prostitute can be therapeutic dates back thousands of years. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, a poem from ancient Mesopotamia, Enkidu—a friend of the king who is half wild—is civilized by having sex with a whore. The tale portrays the prostitute as sacred because she sacrifices herself to the man to cleanse him of destructive inner forces.

“Material” Girls

Other researchers disagree that prostitutes serve as a balm for the woes of essentially normal men. Sociologist Julia O’Connell Davidson of the University of Nottingham in England characterizes johns as necrophiliacs who commit their acts on socially “dead” women. These are men, she says, whose sexual desire is switched on by not having to care about the prostitute as a human being—the opposite of the intimacy hypothesis.

“What turns the john on is the woman’s powerlessness,” O’Connell Davidson concludes. Sex with a prostitute, she says, is more about seeking revenge on women or exerting control over them than about a quest for intimacy and romance.

In a speech he gave to the European Parliament in 2006, Månsson pointed out that johns frequently speak about sex “as a consumer product rather than an expression of intimate relations.” One man, he reported, compared sex with a prostitute to “going to McDonald’s.” Indeed, on the Internet, where a person can remain relatively anonymous, many johns refer to women as “material,” Gerheim notes, and may also describe misogynistic submission fantasies.

Some sex purchasers may even have a social agenda to go along with their personal predilections. For many of them, Månsson opines, a prostitute’s bed represents the last bastion of antifeminism. Only there can men reestablish the traditional male dominance over women.

Catering to such men, brothels in countries where these institutions are legal hawk women like merchandise on their Web sites. Meanwhile nudist clubs in nations such as Germany attract customers with “all-inclusive” deals: for a fixed price (often less than $100), men can have sex with any of the women present. Some clubs even offer happy-hour specials.

Månsson believes that johns are usually psychologically disturbed and in need of counseling and treatment. Many Swedish johns similarly view their sexual behavior as “out of control” or “psychologically toxic,” a self-characterization certain scientists reject. In the opinion of these dissenters, johns in the U.S. and other countries that ban prostitution are unjustly criminalized and labeled mentally unstable.

However toxic the activity might be to the men, the women often end up more seriously wounded by it. At the very least, prostitutes suffer psychologically from trying to wall off their own emotions so that they can sell intimacy as a commodity. In addition, they often suffer from physical abuse at the hands of johns. The 2006 annual report of KARO, an organization trying to thwart prostitution in the region dividing Germany and the Czech Republic, noted many incidents of brutality related to the selling of sex. Prostitutes in the U.S. are also subject to high levels of violence.

Prostitution is not a profession women pursue because they like the work. As stated on the KARO Web site: “Very few women have ever said that they voluntarily became prostitutes.” Poverty, drug addiction or fear of violence from pimps often pushes women into the sex trade.

Thus, many experts argue that the female sex workers are not the real drivers of prostitution. Instead the business survives because of demand from the legions of males who have problems in their relationships with women. This rationale lies behind the law in Sweden that came into force in 1999 under which selling sex is legal but buying sex is not. The same notion also propels a growing crop of workshops and classes in the U.S. aimed at discouraging offending males from repeating an act that many consider a crime against women.

Hey Ed - thanks for the info - long overdue. Many relationships and marriages were broken or fragmented due to the strains presented by such male indulgences. Can women ever turn a blind eye to their partner's indiscretions which rightly so, now many consider a crime against women?

When Charlie Sheen was caught using prostitutes he was asked why a movie star like him paid to have sex.

To which his answer was something like - I don't pay for women to come to my home for sex, I pay for them to go home afterwards.

Men go to prostitutes because they can't get it elsewhere or the woman of the night is better looking than what they have at home.

It is not a big issue. Its all a matter of instant easy gratification. Wham bam thank you ma'am - with no emotional strings attached. When you are hungry you cook or buy food. When you feel randy and sexually frustrated, you go out and buy sex. No big deal. However, when a man is in a serious relationship and cherish his woman tremendously, then buying sex on the side can jeopardize and ruin all chances of retaining that relationship. No woman will tolerate sharing her man with another and vice versa.

Men are men I guess. I have never really understood what the big deal is with prostitution. If a man cheats on his wife it doesn't matter if it is with a prostitute or not, it is still breaking his vows. But if a single man wants to pay for it, I don't see the problem. Men tend to have an easier time with sex "sans emotions" than women. It's a release of tension if nothing else.

I think many men are happy just to sit around and get pampered by a bunch of hot young girls without the sex being needed. Just look at strip clubs in the UK and US. It's about self affirmation and ego boosting. "Sad and pathetic"? Well maybe, but men are wired in a certain way and this works for them. In general.

I do think some women do "drive" their men to the call girls by being withholding sex and affection for various reasons. The big crowd of expat women who leave the country with the kids for 3 months every summer to "go back home" comes to mind. The men are naturally lonely and many probably feel rather abandoned. After all, the women choose not to stay with their family. Not saying the men in such cases aren't breaking their marital vows, but certainly many women should have a think about what exactly they are doing to their marriage.

I agree that the domination theory seems far fetched, at least for most men. I think most johns just want to be "loved" unconditionally for a little while. No strings attached.

"Other researchers disagree that prostitutes serve as a balm for the woes of essentially normal men. Sociologist Julia O’Connell Davidson of the University of Nottingham in England characterizes johns as necrophiliacs who commit their acts on socially “dead” women. These are men, she says, whose sexual desire is switched on by not having to care about the prostitute as a human being—the opposite of the intimacy hypothesis."

That's just absurd. Men DO seek intimacy. That's why they are going to the prostitute. They want intimacy without having to worry about commitment. I wager that most men who go to prostitutes actually do feel attracted to the women. Men typically have a strong drive to protect women, and a "defenseless" prostitute can probably trigger that.

"The article is not relevent to Asia, in the west I never knew anyone who would use prostitutes. Most whores would be vile crack addicts who wonder the streets to make money to feed their habit.

In Asia most men use prostitutes, but its different, certainly many are forced into it but if you walk into Wanchai bars you will find that most of the girls as someone once described it to me are just good girls with really sh&&%ty jobs. They are there to make sure they and their families can put a roof over their heads and food on the table. These women hang out in bars having fun making money at the same time."

Well put. Prostitution in most Western countries is a very sad affair. Trafficking and slavery abound. Girls are forced to market themselves in unsafe places where they can be abused by pimps. In a place like HK the typical prostitute is not controlled by an abusive pimp who feeds her drug habit. AS Sad Sack mentions, they are mostly "good girls with sh*****y jobs". It's not a perfect world but it certainly is better. You don't hear about a lot of dead call girls in HK.

Since prostitution is going to happen anyway, I think legalizing it is the only good move. Legalize it, regulate it, force transparent accounting and regular health checks. In Germany or The Netherlands, prostitutes who have problems with pimps or johns can go to the police. In a country like Sweden they have to self incriminate to report abuse.

It is perhaps not the world's prettiest business, but there is absolutely no way to stop it. Make it legal and protect the women.

Also, I think prostitution should be more socially acceptable. I think the "ugly" thing in most people's eyes is the sex. But implied sex is everywhere. Look at movies, theater, dance, Cirque du Soleil. Certainly women "exposing themselves" abound. Why is it that those not actually doing it are pure, while those who have sex with customers are dirty? Isn't sex a natural and beautiful part of being human?

nothing wrong with paying for it occasionally.... if you can buy a massage, car, clothes, why not sex? surely the key thing here to to accept that men are going to buy sex whether its right or not - so the question should be, what can we do to make the women more comfortable - not why do men go. as surely its a useless topic to discuss.

I could not agree more. Trying to stop prostitution is like trying to stop the tide. Since it will happen anyway, what "efforts" there are should be put towards making prostitution "better" for the sex workers. Less social stigmatization, more protection from pimps and abusive customers, better medical support.

Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world and as usual women that are not prostitutes totally hate prostitutes, they regard them as a threat to their own security. It was interesting to read the first article in this thread in which the writer slams other cultures regarding prostitution and typicaly contines to ignore the fact that here in China sex KTVs, brothels, sex hotels, sex bars, even forcing their own citiizens into sexual slavery over the border into countries like Cambodia, is very common place. Also totally ignored is the fact that prostitution exists in reverse in many countries e.g rich women buying sex of young men e.g Shanghai, Japan, Europe, America etc. Why do men or women pay a partner for uncomplicated sex, the answer is simple, humans enjoy sex as a recreation. Psyholgists can try to make a name for themselves through attaching labels to any male or female that pays for non commital uncomplicated sexual recreation. Labels such as " a type of nechcrophiliac desire" " a potential rapist" " a desire to degrade the opposite sex" the list of nonsense seems endless and changes constantly. Imagine having sex with one of these over anylytical headbangers, what would be going through their minds at that moment? Prostitution becomes very bad if a male or female is forced againt their wishes to do that ( ref- many Asian countries). However, like it or not, prostitution exists because humans are one of the few species on this planet that regard sex as a pleasurable recreational activity. Why do men pay for sex is a nasty over the top feminist title and is clearly written by a very angry person with a lot of psychological problems. The comment should be = why do people pay for sex. The answer is of course obvious, "they enjoy uncomplcated sex". This has been the attitudes of humans for as far back as our history goes. Inteligent governments acknowledge prostitution exists, they regulate and control it and yes they arrest and deal with those persons that use prostitution as a form of abuse or crime and those governments openly provide statistics on these facts. Unintelligent governmentspretend prostitutiondoes not exist andthey finger point absurdly at other countries and hope to provide a negative label on the majority through the actions of a criminal minority. To the angry first writer on this thread I strongly suggest you take a closer look at the side streets in your city and particularly the nationality of the people selling and buying sex.

For everyone here who thinks that prostitution is O.K., would you also think it's o.k. for your little sister to become a prostitute? How about your mother?

Interesting question Sarita1. My thoughts:

- With current mores in the West and the Orient I would say it is not the best of professions. So while I think it would create problems socially for, say, my little sister, I would not stand in her way if she made decent money and was happy with her life.

- If my little sister the hypothetical prostitute was victimized by pimps and customers I would think her career choice to be a bad idea.

- I think that prostitutes should have a higher social status than they do. I certainly don't think they deserve the stigma that they have today. I think the profession should be respected as a real job. Of course, this means that prostitutes should have the same rights and protections as holders of other jobs. For example the right to refuse customers, the right to police assistance, the right to health care and the right to be safe in their workplace.

You should not reduce a serious discussion like this to a subjective arguement like 'would you also think it's o.k. for your little sister to become a prostitute? How about your mother?'

Those who claim that prostitution is a 'victimless crime' really should think again."

It's not a crime in Hong Kong.

And I take issue with the stance that prostitutes are victims by default. This typically happens in countries with illegal prostitution and human trafficking. In countries with legal prostitution it might not be a girl's dream job but they are typically not victims.

In an ideal world, prostitution would be recognized as a reputable profession.

I don't think it is fare to say it is mostly about tax.

There are public health issues to consider, this has been a bigger consideration in more recent years.

And public order issues.

In many countries where it has traditionally been illegal there has always been a red light district, So that the police could maintain a watchful eye, if not some control.

"I would note that legalising prostitution does not by definition decrease human trafficking and abuse. Trafficking and abuse also happen in countries where prostitution is legalised."

Agreed. That is why de-stigmatizing prostitution is important. If customers can go to a "clean and reputable" prostitute/brothel that is registered and so forth I would think most would choose that option instead of an illegal crack addict street walker. The trick is to make the legal option more palatable/attractive. A it like the choice between the board certified doctor and the cheap but unlicensed quack.

Of course, legalizing and so forth doesn't solve all the problems by a long shot, but since prostitution will happen regardless it seems unreasonable not to go for the solution which can best protect the women finacially, socially and physically.

People pay for it because they can.

We work so we have money, we have money so we can spend it. Why do you reckon they still paid out nearly 250K an idiot in bonuses after a government bail out? Coz they can...what else were they going to do with that money? Who cares!

Its weird but hey, as long as one human thinks that they can treat another human as commodity, there will be the same of humans...The modern day capitalist society was built on the foundation of slavery. We have no more slaves, so how else can we feed that hunger to enslave our fellow human, right?

I think, legalize it, allow for a fair and even profitable trade with full legal rights and protection by the law, prostitution would be just another business with balance books and the lot...and if a wife wanted to know if her husband was at the rub-and-tug the other week when he said he was working late, it would be fairly easy for her to find out. If she didnt want to know, at least she would know he got a rub and tug from someone, and someone probably better trained than her, probably also someone who was more keen because she had something to gain by doing her job! Lol.

Men buy sex for a variety of reasons and I imagine fulfilling sexual desires, and companionship might be very high on the list. I imagine necrophelia to come in around .000000000001 percent of the reasons. I find that theory offensive disrespectul and demeaning to the women who chose to work in the sex industry. - There are many women who pay for sex also, there is something 'safe' about paying for a no-strings-attached companion. And on some level its basically more honest than seducing someone or dissapointing them that you don't call them back.

Sexual favors for money is fine in my book (I am a woman) however, sex slavery is a huge problem, and a lucrative industry..the third largest black marketing the world, after drugs and arms.

Imagine your daughter or sister stolen or tricked into prostitution and repeatedly raped. This is where the idea of necrophilia might ring true. The problem is, when guys in our city go down to wan chai or call a come hither advertisement in the paper, how do they know they are seeing a trafficked woman and raping her or a professional who has chosen to do it and therefore given her consent...?

Therein lies the biggest - and growing problem

I agree that traficking is a problem but actually it is not a big problem in Hong Kong. Traficking typically comes into the picture if prostitution is illegal. Since prostitution in HK is largely "in the open" no one is hiding from the police.
