What Would You Do?

A few months I suspected that my computers were being hacked into. I suspect that it was my ex and I finally had enough so I took my PDA to the Police.

Fast forward a few months and I hadn't heard anything. So the other day I went to pick up my PDA and they told me that they had been trying to reach me, but couldn't. After this whole thing, I changed my phone number.

It turns it it was my ex and they were waiting to see if I wanted to press charges. I am livid, but not sure if I want to hurt someone like this even though what they did to me.

If I went ahead and filed charges they said that they could get jail time and or be deported, but at the very least they would get tossed out of HKG.

I am so furious right now but want to get others thoughts before I throw the book . . .

p_o'd, you are justifiably angry over what has been done to you but wait until your mind is completely cold and clear before doing anything.

Yes, think it over. Maybe a solicitor's letter to your ex may help - though I'm not sure if this is relevant now the police are involved.

But at least a letter informing the ex that they know what's going on and are thinking whether or not to press charges?

The ex should be made aware that they have been discovered committing a serious crime, right?

I would also be interested in knowing the purpose/nature of the hack.

Was it just to mess with your files in a way that would P you off?

Or was it more invading your privacy to stalk you. As in a possesive jealous kinda activity.

The former is an annoyance and warning shot from a solicitor is probably enough.

If the latter, then some action might be needed in order to fend of potential risks.

I know a woman who got into her ex's files and emailed and phoned all his clients and colleages to say what a Bast--d he was. So there is a proffessional risk here.

If it is this stalker type of behavior, it is possibly more sinister is your ex is male.

i think the intention is really key. and probably also how serious the hack was.

did he/she use your old passwords to access your data. or did he/she install a key logger or trojan?

I think u shld just take action against him. What he did is wrong, hacking into someone's computer without that person's knowledge means he has bad intentions. By taking action against him, ur helping others by not letting them fall victim to this kind of person. Deport him is good for this city, less 1 criminal.

The damage was both personal and professional. I still haven't decided but I am agreeing that if I don't follow thru, that they will keep on attacking me and will eventually do it to someone else.

I harm has been done, and if the attacks are continuing then you must act.

This does sound like stalking.

If there is a real risk to any of your employers data, It may be worth checking with your companies IT security to tighten up security on your mail or other accounts. They may also advise on taking action.

Be aware though that it may black flag you with an unsympathetic employer. I would only to this if there was a bigger risk in not informing them.

You also have to remember that idiot expats running amok get all expats a bad name.

If you worry that your ex will eventually do the same to someone else, then you must take action.

Just dropped off another laptop to the police. They said it will be a couple of weeks for them to examine that and then they will go ahead and file the charges. Thanks for all of your advice . . .

It's the right thing to do.

Absolutely, you should press charges. Someone who has tried this will do worse in the future if you let them get away with it. And, yes, it's usually women who get vindictive when a relationship fails. Men either give up, or turn into stalkers.

good luck for your future - there are lots of decent people out there.

Press charges! He might do it to someone else and it might be more than just hacking a PDA!! He has to know that he's not allowed to do things like this.

Just to update everyone. I was stupid and I didn't follow ahead and press charges against this person and she ended up costing me my job.

Luckily, I still have my hard drives and I am in the process of retrieving the data to hand it over to the police and also bring a civil suit against her.

A warning to others. There are some nasty, vindictive people out there who don't think that there are consequences for their actions. So, for the rest of you, its time that everyone stops turning their heads and ignoring the trash that it is in Hong Kong.
