Anyone knows about korean hostess bars?

My husband is recently often going to those korean hostess bars for business treats.


He says he has to go but he really hates it believe or not and he also

mentioned once those girls don't do prostitution.


Is that true? girls really light your cigarette, drink with you and sing songs and get paid?


We been married for over 13 years and have been in hk for 2 years.


I am really stressed about my man's night out and truly want to go back to US.


Should I just trust what he tells me?

A colleague took me to one of those bars some years ago. I didn't see any monkey business. If there was, it must have been very under cover. Think men bonding over a bottle of whiskey.

Well it's pretty entrenched in the business culture. These places are not as seedy as a KTV in China for example. I first experienced these in 1995 and up until now I have not seen any other goings on. There are plenty of other places to go for anything else including the local barber shop. I'd worry if his hair gets cut a lot!

If a businessman wants to fool around there are many opportunities to do so in Korea (or any other country for that matter). But not everyone does it. There is a lot of entertainment required in Korea, that's just the nature of the environment. The fact that your husband tells you about it is probably a good sign. Looks like you have a trust issue, which is an even bigger problem that you need to resolve.


You say he is out to 3am two nights every month - assume this is in HK. Frankly this is about the norm, just be glad it isn't 1 night every week. Does he still pay the same attention to you? Do you nag him to the point where he doesn't want to be home? Are you letting your insecurities intrude in an otherwise healthy relationship?

They are very tame, I used to work in one in Japan! Sometimes women come with their companies as well. It's more like a civilised loungeroom type bar, mainly the hostess makes the drinks at the table allowing the businessmen to discuss their deals in a relaxed comfortable setting. There's an ice bucket, glasses, a bottle of whiskey and snacks, the hostess keeps the glasses filled with whiskey and water and ice, set's the karoake machine, helps the customers sing and makes small talk when needed. It's more tame than any niteclub I wouldn't worry!

in principle i agree with the statements above. however one thing should be said: if someone is looking for something 'more' than drinks and chatting, it's certainly available in the korean hostess bars in hk

If someone is looking the where doesn't really matter(Church, School, work etc.)

yes, but you probably can't just buy it off the shelf in the church/school/etc

Having spent time in Korean/Japanese KTV and Hostess bars on business, they are generally very very legit ... in that, you can't do anything in the actual place other than eat fruit, get loudly drunk, sing badly and grope gently about with the hostesses ...


... however if you are that kind of bloke, then its also possible to negotiate with the same hostess girl/girls for a take out ...


In Korea & Japan almost every town/city has its KTV's, Hostess bars and short time "love hotels" ... that's the nature of the way they do things and business ... its not quite the same in HK, but not far off it.


However ... having said the above ... both the korean and japanese businessmen do have a major drinking culture, it is expected if your working for foe a Japanese or Korean company ... as a westerner/foreigner to participate in these outings, oh and absolutely nobody leaves until the boss is ready to go home. Its all about face, business, promotion and cultural expectations... and dont forget the drinking (team building), you collegues get to see you and listen when you are "CUT"


My questions to you are ... do you really know your man, do you understand what he does with his company and what he is required to do to support you? Lucky for you it is only twice a month ... I have known and seen it much much worse


So its really a matter of trust ... just how insecure are you.
