Right, this is urgent. I have a wedding to attend this evening and I don't have any red envelopes on me, except if I want to give them the one that says "Happy New Year" (I know, I know, I should have planned this!!!) So my first question is, is it ok to do the western thing and give a wedding wish card with the money tucked in there?
Second question is, how much do you have to put in there? I had to RSVP to this wedding on some online thing and I chose the fish, my partner is getting the beef and the kidlet is getting a kids meal. So if this wedding is at the Repulse Bay, how much should I stick in there?
All answers would be greatly appreciated (as I run to the shops to buy a wedding wish card!)

You should give enough to at least cover the cost of the diner and any ents. and in HK this can be a lot. Then think about gifting something.
I remember reading, a while back, that the average Shanghai guy will spend 81% of his life savings on the wedding. But will hope to get that back, plus a little marriage start up fund, with red envelopes.
500 may have been enough a few years ago, but not anymore in the larger cities or more developed areas (HK, Taiwan).
800 is a lucky number. 1000 is a round number. If it is family I believe that 10 000 is not unusual.
We went to a wedding a few years back and the hotel had red envelopes. Including fat ones for wads.

it is quite a lot. that's why hong kongers have a joke saying that wedding invitations are 'red bombs.'
the venue of the wedding should also be considered. being at the repulse bay, a club or hotel.....money gifts should be higher than if it were at a local chinese restaurant
