I work in one of the corporate functions dept in an ibank in Central. In my line of business, most are women or married men or unattractive men. I notice there are a few attractive guys on the trading floor. But I only have access to certain floors. Most firm activities are for women... Baking cake, mahjong competition, painting... The only sports activity is dragonboat training. I did that & dated a guy from there. But i dont like his values. We haven't met again. I am studying part time to do an MBA to hope to change to working on the trading floor. But it is not easy....I usually run into the same people only once or twice. I have worked here for half year. I tried to wait in the lobby during lunch hours but I cannot run into those guys. I can meet guys on the street. sometimes, either of us can smile or say hi & go from there... But the probability of running into the same person is so low... How many hours do I need to wait? Everyone go to work or have
lunch at slightly different hours. I also need to study... It is odd if I follow the staff to go to their floors. Can anybody tell me what I can do except waiting to change job internally next year? Where can I meet hardworking & attractive guys? BTW, one of my ex bfs is a hardworking trader but he cannot transfer to here since his investment products are not popular here. He is based in London. I cannot find a guy like him here!

I am with Philly Cheese and CaptDave on this. I worked in finance and the guys there, bless their monogrammed socks, are, for the great part, high scorers on the douche-o-meter. Ask the semi-nice traders what they would say if their own daughter came home and asked them if it was ok to date a trader and they will promptly answer "hell no".
It seems in that industry you either end up being the coke-bag holder, the kept yet blind-eyed wife, or the office trike! Why would you want to date someone from that industry anyway?
And let me tell you, as you said, its rare to find one in that industry that isn't headed for heart disease, sporting a champagne gut or married...so the good looking ones end up being the biggest w@nkers of the lot, coz they have it made.
Shame about your ex-bf being one of the nice guys but completely out of reach...seems that there in lies a recurring theme.

Jealousy....imagine if can choose to meet 2 types of guys: those work from early morning to late night or those who stay in a bar/club till late night? Greed? Who is not in the world? Would you pick un ugly poor woman if you can pick a successful attractive woman? If you are tall, goodlooking & well educated, would you aim for more or less? Why not start hanging around public hospitals to look for surgeons or consultants? They may earn a little less upfront but the cashflow is more steady and they will provide you more intelligent kids than a trader. Don't forget, anyone can trade - you certainly don't need an MBA. A share can either go 1) up 2) down 3) not move or 4) disaappear. You only need to be able count to four.

I wish I knew where to hang out when I studied in London. Can't go back now. Well balanced guys are hard to find here. Most are taken. I know a lot of women get top jobs in my firm too. They can buy lots of Chanel hand bags without relying on men. It is not just about money when you target your potential partner. Loads of rich guys here ... I think you're being unfair on Dingo. She has already rejected one trader because of his values, so its fair to assume she's not as bad as some have suggested.

Gosh, it is not a real Q. As I said, I study part time & my job is really busy. My line if business is not related to investment banking. Most of my colleagues don't know guys on that floor. The HK company culture is different. There are very few social activities within the firm. I know a few guys from other floors but you can't hang out often with them & ask if you can introduce those top guys to me. I dated a guy from the IT support on the trading floor & in fact I have interests in others guys not you. All the gossip & embarassment will spread through. Activities? Probably play rugby in football club! Lol. His name not Rozza. But maybe several traders come here to promote a product. He is a very modest, generous, successful guy from Europe. That type of guy mostly just works even on weekends. If the firm helps organise golf playing or sailing, I won't be writing here to see if anyone working in the same firm and can help secretly.

This is really confusing ... from what I can surmise, you work in a support function at an ibank with limited contact with bankers / traders. So I assume you're not even in HR / Compliance ...
You keep mentioning "top guys" ... which I think is a problem. As someone in the industry and an expat - when guys hear comments like that - they will either be scared away or take u for what that comment paints you to be - someone in it to "win it" with a specific goal in mind.
I met the woman I love through friends and I don't think she sees me as a meal ticket and she is not in finance. So either a) adjust your attitude, expectations and maybe values or b) be ready for the type of relationship that those attitudes get you
And if you're okay with B - then just go troll around LKF - you'll find that Mr. Right Now rather than Mr. Right soon enough.

You also expect someone middle class if you earn ok yourself. Not necessarily a trader. Just that most handsome guys work on that floor coincidently. I have also studied finance. My LOB is related to fund side of business. Loads of staff here...I am not just interested in money like most people. I like fashion & attractive people. This makes me picky. If you want to meet men, be approachable and have a sense of humour. Dress well but not too well. Many people, especially overseas Chinese and Expat Europeans, would probably avoid a work relationship as it can affect their careers. All investment bankers, especially American ones, now work under the Stalinist HR cosh. I mean you don't want someone storming onto the trading floor screaming, "You dirty, two-timing b*stard! Many HK ladies (with the notable exception of Miss HK contestants), with the right hair and makeup, are quite attractive.

Well, p.mason ... I'm not trying to pick an argument with you but the fact is that if she had a lot in common with the types of guys whom she wanted to meet, she would be meeting them already. From her account (about only having access to certain floors etc.), it seems clear that the building/banking entity where she works segregates employees by their function and that's how she is being kept from prowling for the specific sort of guys she wants.

Dingo - you mention that your company doesn't arrange any interesting events or sports. The heads up to this is- The people who normally start these thing in companies are people who have interest in them. Find an interest, understand it then work out a way of how to start a club within your company. All your time wasted sitting in lobbies could be used more wisely creating something to add value to your life and others. You then may find that when your desirable men see you doing something of value rather than shopping for a handbag, you may have to beat them off with a stick.
If you don't like this idea you can sit in the lobby and wait but the average wait time for this to happen is 426 hours completed in 48 minute stint's. Keeping in mind that eating and drinking during this process reduces the effectiveness.

you will find plenty of finance guys if you hit lkf clubs.
find a friend with similar ambitions and hang out at "prive" and/or "hyde".
make sure your friend is not too ugly, but uglier than you. The balance is importnat so she will not scare potential suiters away, but won't steal your spotlight.

OP: I think you're suffering from the 'grass is always greener on the other side' syndrome.
How do you know the guys on the trading floor are any better looking than the fellows in your current department? Just because you dated one decent guy who happened to be trader it certainly doesn't mean all traders will be nice.
The selection of guys on the trading floor may not be as wonderful as you dreamed and then you'll might wish you were back to your current dept. However, my guess, you'll wish you were in yet another ideal floor, department, industry, etc.
