If you are going to ask someone to marry you, shouldn't you know them well enough to know the best venue/setting???

If she is typical Shanghainese, she will like the glamour aspect, but you will know her better, maybe she isn't "typical".


If she likes glamour, go for a flashy romantic restaurant for dinner and do the ring in the dessert/glass thing, making sure she doesn't eat it. I have a suspicion Chinese gals probably go for the whole "down on one knee" thing too, so you could drop to one knee as she finds the ring...have a short speech prepared.


But honestly, it could be by the river, at a concert, on a boat, in a taxi, a proposal is a proposal, she isn't likely to turn you down becasue the "setting" isn't up to scratch.

Do they have any river cruises on traditional boats? That would be cute.


Or how about a nice weekend outing somewhere - if you have had a nice day, ask her on the way back, or when you get home, after a great lunch out and a great day, you will alwasy remember it.


Just follow your heart - it would be just as good after a trip to seven eleven, honestly.

Go for somewhere high, with a view of the city....always a winner. I proposed in Vertigo in Bangkok this summer an amazing venue. Good luck!
