I am marrying my domestic helper in April. I have read various sites about what to do next but I am still nervous about immigration hassling us, esp. when I give notice of the marriage in a week or so. Should she continue to work for me while waiting for the HK dependent visa OR should she quit and leave HK and wait for the dependent visa in her home country? Also, I need a cheap civil celebrant for the wedding. Thank you.

Yours is not a unique story. It seems that many has done this already and no major hassles/problems have been reported.
In the immigration's point of view, you just need to prove that your marriage is not a sham one just to get your helper PR status here in HK. Photos, baby, letters, etc. may help prove your relationship is real.

Thanks for that answer. Do we tell immigration that we were dating before I hired her or try to make it look like I fell in love with her after I hired her? We dated for almost 6 months before she became my helper. Thanks.

Being honest is the best way I guess. It's easier to defend.
If you really love each other, just get married and take things step by step.
If it was me, I would go to the nearest wedding registry (if you haven't done it yet), get registered, ask them what you need to get married (documents and others), and get wed. After the wedding, have your wife apply for a dependent's visa. Let immigration deal with it. Your wedding is not dependent on their actions anyway, right?

Thanks. That sounds like a good plan. We are going to give notice next week and get married in either late March or early April. I don't want her to have to leave while waiting for the HK dependent visa. I would prefer to just keep the work visa active until we get the dependent visa and then she can go to Macau and re-enter on her new visa like I did when I got a work visa here.

Your new wife may need not get out of HK to get her status changed from FDH to dependent. You can ask the immigration officer for confimrmation of this once you put in the application.

It used to be fairly common for Old China Hands to marry their amahs before returning to retirement in the UK. This was a strictly commercial arrangement, of course, the amah would look after him, and he would ensure that she was financially supported for the rest of her life.
I am not implying that this is relevant, other than as an item of historical interest.

The reason I chose this site to ask my question and not the geo-expat one is because the other site's users have a tendency to take a straightforward question and not answer it but instead throw a lot of snark and other business at the original poster. I asked a simple question about the mechanics of the process given my situation. I am not asking for marriage advice from armchair Dr. Phils or HK "experts."

Being a married man for several years, all I can say is good luck... :-) Marriage is a "fickle" mistress that can turn you into the "helper" if she doesn't get her way! Hehehehe...and I've been slaving cause ever since! Hahahaha

Hi Lammaguy. I know this was already 2 years ago.
I have the same situation right now. My employer which is my boyfriend/fiance and I are getting married soon. I just want to ask if you had problem applying for your wife's dependent visa? Did the immigration approve? and what are the requirements for applying a dependent visa? I am also nervous for applying a visa after we get married.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
