Opportunity only knocks once

I've been working in Shanghai for 3 years now in a consultancy firm. My job is rewarding but not without trade off to my love life. My boyfriend of 2 years broke up with me 3 years ago when I took up the offer to move to Shanghai.

I've had my fair share of regrets for choosing work over love but I'm all done and over now. Besides work,I'm completely empty and lonely. My deserted personal life is killing my passion to continue my job.

A male friend I've known for many years have offered me a tempting deal to partner in his new jewelry business. I've always wanted to be involved in jewelry designing. In this partnership, I'll contribute my designing skills for a stake in the business.

It would have been a dream come true for me if it was that straight forward. It isn't. This male friend has been interested in me for many years and I don't feel the same for him. We've discussed about this and he has been convincing it won't be personal. I am not convinced at all.

I would like to accept the offer but I'm afraid it would be difficult to separate business and personal matters especially with a person like him. Taking the offer also means giving him more opportunity to be closer to me. My biggest concern and weakness - I don't want to feel indebted to him in realizing my dream without returning his love.

I've made more make or break decisions in work, but I'm a complete loser in my personal life. I'm afraid of losing this opportunity at the same time do not want to give him false hope.

Guys, would you seriously and genuinely offer your long time crush (who happened to be single) such an offer without any intention of winning her over time?

Possible, but ther will always be an interest.

Better keep your business and persoanl lefe seperate.

Also a financial risk. If you do decide to go forward, make sure you get salary, not just a share in the business, as you may have to bail out.

Another option, you could contribute design without giving up the day job, and without needing to be in the same office.

An acquaintance set up a business with an ex classmate who has had a long standing crush on her.

It folded because they couldn't get along. Was controlling and took things very personally. You'd attribute these traits to a partner sometimes but that's not something you want to experience with a business partner.

Do you respect this person? If your first thought is- No, but I just want the opportunity to go jewelry design. I'd say beware.

Why not suggest working together on a freelance basis. You could maintain your current job and do the design in your spare time. Think of it as a trial period for you both.

Not sure why you mentioned your break-up and subsequent relationship drought at the begining of the thread though. Are you afraid you might succumb to this man's advances?

Why do you say that you are a loser in your personal life? To choose work over love does not make you a loser.

Why don't you list down all the pros and cons to see what if:

1. you take on the job with him and he can separate the personal and business relations

2. You become his business partner but later on it turns out that he/you cannot treat your relationship (business/personal) separately

3. You work for him as a freelancer in your free time

4. You have no business relations with him

5. You work with him together and you develop your feelings toward him.

The important point in this analysis is to be honest to yourself why considering all those scenarios.

Agree with an earlier post, the job as an jewery designer can be found not only in his company.
