Seems like those wholesome magazines and books are always full of testimonies from women who have wonderful husbands and the couples' biggest problem is not spending enough quality time together; while internet chatlines are always full of cheating, lying husbands. Doesn't seem right that the whole world is made up of only these two extremes. Anyone out there with more "moderate" tales to tell?

Media, and us, mainly interested in
-ordinary people doing extraordinary things, e.g. pub landlord eats 200 pickled eggs, or secretary delivers baby in elevator. Little old lady rescues fireman from tree. Janitor to address WTO.
OR
-Extraordinary people doing ordinary things. e.g. Ivan Trump sitting at home. The Queen seen eating a bag of chips on her visit to Blackpool.
WTO President roles up his sleeves to help in crisis.
-But ordinary doing ordinary don't sell papers.
Janitor does good job.

Ok, back to original topic in this thread. Does anyone have a partner who smokes around the kids a lot, or who is an alcoholic but not a violent one, or who is a gambling addict but no where near losing the clothes on their back yet, or who is steeped in porn and then can't get it up during the real thing. Something more serious than a dearth of quality time. Less serious than actual cheating.

My uncle had a good job as an auditor for PO. Quiet good pay for a working calss lad.
He used to gamble however. He would often blow the pay packet before he got home on Friday night. My aunt had to bring up 6 kids on her own, working as a cleaner then as a nurse.
Uncle Ron came home one night to say he had lost the house in a game of cards. Auntie packed her bags and took the kids and struggled on; but hey, he never contributed anyway.
On the bright side. My Aunt made her career in Nursing. At age 40 she graduated from the Open University. She did higher study, and finished her career lecturing, teaching Nurses.
On a sadder note, both her 2nd and 3rd husbands died of Cancer, one within 2 yrs of the marriage.
All in all my aunt has had it tough. But she has raised six great kids, and lots of grandkids, and is a great grandma. At age 70 she is still as cheerful and resilient as others. She is surrounded by family who love her to bits. This is what you get for giving, giving, giving.

Yes, those things I mentioned ARE less serious than cheating. I made sure to qualify that the example of the alcoholic is not violent, the gambler is one who does not gamble away his paycheck, etc. Reason I started this thread is that it seems that when you have a real bad problem, you get the support. But when the problem is not extreme (like a cheating partner, a violent alcoholic partner, a gambling partner who ruins you financially, etc), where does one go for support? Problems that are not extreme can still take their toll over time. Can be just as debilitating to the psyche.

Relate (as marriage guidance is now called in UK) deals with little issues, and likes to deal with them before they become big ones. And you can go for advice on your own, you don't have to take your partner.
I assume/wouldhope it is similar in other countries.
