Dubai: Expats Pursue Sex For Sale

The other big category of punters is Europeans and Americans, and it is remarkable how quickly it all seems normal. A few drinks with the lads on a Thursday night, maybe a curry, some semi-intoxicated ribaldry, and then off to a bar where you know "that" kind of girl will be waiting. In the west, peer group morality might frown on such leisure activities, but in Dubai it's as normal as watching the late-night movie.

Male residents whose families are also in Dubai might be a little constrained most of the year – you could not really introduce Ludmilla from Lvov, all cleavage and stilettos, as a work colleague with whom you wanted to "run over a few things on the laptop". But in the long, hot summer it is different. Wives and families escape the heat by going to Europe or the US, and the change that comes over the male expat population is astounding. Middle-aged men in responsible jobs – accountants, marketeers, bankers – who for 10 months of the year are devoted husbands, transform in July and August into priapic stallions roaming the bars of Sheikh Zayed Road.

Tales are swapped over a few beers the next night, positions described, prices compared, nationalities ranked according to performance. It could be the Champions League we are discussing, not paid-for sex.

I've heard financial types justifying it as part of the process of globalisation, another manifestation of the west-east "tilt" by which world economic power is gravitating eastwards.

In my experience, many men will be unfaithful if they have the opportunity and a reasonable expectation that they will not be found out. For expats in Dubai, the summer months provide virtual laboratory conditions for infidelity.

The writer is as or more Puritanical than the authorities and attitudes he is criticising.

The writer seems to be arguing that the authorities should crack down on prostitution because they crack down on public displays of affection (pda). Or that it is ridiculous to crack down on pda if you allow prostitution. Definitely the authorities, the hypocrites who allow visas to be farmed for prostitution, should be doing something.

What about letting the adult individuals concerned make their own minds up?

Ed is perfectly right in describing as to what is happening in Dubai. I am an expat working and living in Dubai for many years and totally agree with him. Cracking down on hookers is not possible as it would affect the liberal image that Dubai has in the middle east. Yes Men are men, where there is an opportunity, they will crack in to their advantage. Hypocrisy is very much prevalent in Dubai as most of the adult and dating websites are banned but you can easily pick up a whore in a night club at Bur Dubai or Sheikh zayed Road and take her to your hotel, if you are a tourist in Dubai.

This is the height of hypocrisy here, well that is a part of our lives and we all are used to it by living here for over a decade.

The article is not about the fact that there is a sex trade but about the hypocrisy about the visiting Saudis and the local Emiratis. I felt the article was spot on. Its not about the Expats living there indulging themselves as they find public display of affection ACCEPTABLE. (maybe not in their host country).

An Indian couple was jailed a few months ago for exchanging lewd SMS messages.

A western couple done for a peck on the cheek as a local woman felt HURT when she had to pull away her 6 yr old son watching this Brit couple in the ACT in a public place . A bit of a paradox when the same woman's hubby may be paying for the services of an Eastern European which she will find acceptable.

Going a bit too far considering everything else goes even if it defies the local religious laws.

Thailand was infamous for its sex trade in the mid/late 80's. The Govt spent time and money cleaning up the image and have suceeded to a large extent in promoting things other than the sex trade. Its a family holiday destination as well now.

If the Rulers in Dubai wanted, they do have a critical mass of other tourist attractions which can override the 30000 or so Eastern Europeans working in the trade. They may loose on the tourism Dhirams of the neighbouring Emirates though.

Hong kong: Expats Pursue Sex For Sale:. That too applies. It's not only in Dubhai that this trade is going on. I lived in Hong kong long enough to notice it. If wives and families in Dubhai go to other countries to escape the heat during the summer, Same months where it's a school break in Hong kong where wives and kids are off to thier home country to enjoy the school break leavings husbands behind, while they too enjoy thier freedom, and usually husbands joined them later 2 weeks before they will all return back in time for back to school. I've known a lot of married people and friends as well who brings in not just sex workers but thier co-worker and secretaries too in thier home for sex. Same what goes on in Dubhai, happens here too.

The diff in HK is the GOVT does not interfere of pretend it does not happen. The Govt does not put Expats in Prison and let the locals get away with adultery.

The only thing ILLEGAL in HK is soliciting.

In Dubai OFFICIALLY EVERYTHING is illegal for EXPATS and LEGAL for EMIRATI'S.

I have spent time in both and legal rights for NON EMIRATIS are pre historic and arbitarily applied.

God only help you if you are on the wrong side of what they percieve as their law . You could be stuck in a cell with no charge......
