if it works for a person, why not? it's a good idea.
we devote so much time, energy and money to our work/career relationships - it can't hurt to make the same or greater investment in our most important ones.

well I have to say, these self-help courses leave me cold. I keep getting repeated e-mails from a friend asking me to attend that blasted Landmark Forum aswell. For all the cash she's paid going on these forums, she still seems as unhappy as ever. Total con if you ask me.

I've just cleared out three people with bans - there have been plenty of warnings and going forward there will no longer be... there will be immediate bans for sarcastic, insulting or any comments that I feel are inappropriate.
I have far better things to do than having to pick through a thread to remove the rubbish...
For those of you trying to have a proper discussion of this topic, if you find your thread interrupted again please feel free to email me and I will immediately remove those who try to steer things off course.

Frankly, I have little faith for those kind of books who conveniently classify people and there reaction into boxes. All that is mumbo-jumbo that some crooks sell because there is an obvious mal de vivre in our modern society. Our society is one of abundance, and we suffer from what we do not have. Our greed is without boundaries because we have not suffered scarcity. But in another world we would rejoince with what we have.
We need pain to balance our life. When it is not external, then we create it and fuel it.
All that to say : man is so complex and unique that you cannot learn how to make jokes, or to make friends, or to know people inside out, or to date or to be happy. This is an illusion. Coping with humans including ourselves implies dealing with complexity and uncertitude.

evohe - i agree with what you say about our lack of appreciation for what IS there (for what we do have). however - while acknowledging the existence of charlatans and purveyors of "snakeoil" (perfect word) - some humans could really use some guidance on how to cope with other humans.
i might not agree with the methods and books available, but i would support any person trying to improve his/her personal relationships.

But how to spot the charlatans from the professionals? That's the question.

How do you know you are buying a fake watch in Shenzhen : the price - it is much cheaper. Professionals are expensive, while crooks are cheap : they aim low.
People : you need good advice. Given the content of my previous post you can see how valuable they are. I charge 4000 HKD/mn : I am a professional.

therein lies the rub indeed. perhaps a general rule applies: the greater the price [of relationship classes], the higher the snakeoil content.
