Luxury food stuffs always go down well.
As you are a Brit, British foodstuffs would be welcomed. Go to Marks and Spencer's and hit the food hall. When you are there you could also ask local staff what would be a good gift. What I usually see is the the box perhaps costs more than the contents, and so don't be afraid of buying those things that are in those gift packs. It will not be a waste of money.

Erm, if they are as traditional as you say, I doubt they will eat anything british that you give them. Maybe go to the wet market and get them to make a fruit basket for you. It should cost only around $300-400 per basket of fruits.
Alternatively, for something more expensive, go to those chinese herbal/medicine stores and get them either of these: dried scallops, dried fishmaw, sea cucumber or canned abalone.

Dear gb1241,
A nice basket of fruit will be nice.
However, buy the more expensive fruit...ie..not just apples, oranges and bananas.
You can go to city super and buy some Japanese melon (very expensive), grapes, mangos etc...
They will also like dried scallops as GemmaW mentioned.
Or buy them some nice cookies.
If you are going to a restaurant, make sure you pick up the bill BEFORE it arrives at the table.
Do the BATHROOM trick - excuse yourself and tell them you are going to bathroom and give the waiter your credit card. Make sure you do this without them seeing you.
When they ask for the bill - it's already paid for.
Do NOT wait until the bill arrives at the table and then offer to pay for it.
good luck.

I would advise you to buy a nice bottle of cognac.
If your girlfriend's family are very traditional, as you have said, then going to Marks & Spencer's food hall, as another poster here suggested, is a total waste of time and money, whatever you buy will be meaningless.

Sorry folks, I should have been more specific.
My wife's family is traditional but really like the M&S cookies. The fancy ones in the fancy tins.

How about girls? If a girl is invited to meet the parents over a dinner, also with some family friends, at a restaurant, any gift needed? Haven't been on this forum quite a while, wish i read this post before going to the dinner, I didn't buy anything, and of course didn't pay the bill in secret......
