I'm in HK, she's in Shanghai

All,

I've been dating this girl recently.. She's native Japanese and I'm Chinese, and our common dialect is Mandarin... although I'm currently learning Japanese too and she will also try to learn English.

So needless to say communication is tough since neither of us are very good in Mandarin. Add to that challenge I'm now in HK while she's in Shanghai.

Having said that, we're both trying still and I would like to hear some ideas on how we can see each other frequent enough in a cost effective manner.

I make more than her, so I should be able to go to Shanghai once a month to visit her.. but even then the cost can be quite high for me once hotel, dining out, and flight tickets are factored in. She definitely won't be able to afford to come to HK to visit given her salary.

Do you know of any more cost-effective alternative where we can meet somewhere else perhaps (or any other ideas) so that we can meet more often? We're limited to weekend visits too obviously since we both have work during the day.

Thank you all in advance!

p.s. we do web-cams regularly, and I send her digitally hand-drawn cards here and there... I also send her gifts to her office every now and then (e.g. cards, little trinkets, etc). But I think at the end of the day, it's the face-time that's most important.

I think there is a bus and even a train from HK to Shenzhen airport.

Flying from Shenzhen to Shanghai is much cheaper than flying from HK.

There are clean motels in Shanghai from about 160 rmb per night (eg Yotel). And better rooms at motel 268 from about 240 rmb per night.

Meeting somewhere else would involve both of you travelling and increase costs.

Hi,folk,

I once had similar experiences as you are. I spent week-ends in Ningbor where she worked and I went there by air. Costly. Japanese girls are said to be faithful. If she is yours, she will be yours(put it bluntly).

Best way is to save money , to spend a day or two TOGETHER say every 3 to 4 months. That would be enough in all respects.

No work,no money, no hourse to live, no girl friends, folk.

Another thought.

Annual leave, you can travel together to Sanya or somewhere else. You can offer to pay her airfare.

Perhaps some long weekends (4 or 5 days) every 3 to 4 months like Rosedale suggested.

definitively also recommend the shenzhen airport as the base for flights. if you get the booking/timing right, flight prices could be waaaay lower.

trip to shenzhen airport is directly by bus from e.g. wan chai ferry pier bus terminal at 100 HKD per trip

Have you thought of moving to Shanghai? You could probabley make as much there now as you do in Hong Kong?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your invaluable tips. So it sounds like using Shenzhen as a base is more economical. A few questions:

1. Is there an MTR (or train) that connects HK to Shenzhen? If so, how much are we looking at?

2. What is the average airfare from Shenzhen to Shanghai?

3. Are there are special restrictions/permissions/paperwork that's needed to enter Shenzhen from HK? I have a working visa for China and have one for HK as well.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the tips guys. Can someone recommend a clean and reasonably good hotel/motel around the Jing'an area in Shanghai?

There are several Motel 168 and Yotel (New, very basic but clean) and Motel 268 (New, better quality and clean) in Shanghai.

I don't know about near Jing'an. I don't think it is a cheap area. But find one the Metro line 2 and you will get in to Jing'an quickly. Taxis are also cheap in Shanghai.

Do you really need to be near Jing'an?

I do not know Shanghai and areas, but maybe you could stay at a hotel close to the airport. It would save some time travelling around.

Or, is it possible to stay at her flat, since she lives there. Save a little bit of money from using hotels

If you`re visiting her, why are you staying in hotels? That doesn`t make sense to me.

I did this for nearly 2 husband with my now husband. We lived a lot further away than you guys, and it wasn`t a great time. We both spent a lot of money on flights and hotels (when we met in neutral cities), but I guess we were just trying to keep it together bc we both had the idea we would be married one day.

And now we`re stuck with one another;)

Wow, sounds like a dream come true. We're planning to meet up once a month now. But I must say, it is challenging. Although the challenge is part of the appeal I guess since there's this sense that if we can get through this then we can get through anything.

But question: since she's in Shanghai, currently she has to pay on her cell phone for incoming calls from HK. Is there any cost affective way for her to receive incoming calls from Hong Kong?

Thanks!

I mean, I suppose we can use skype/web cam. Thing is, her internet keeps getting dropped so half the time we just try to reconnect. Highly irritating and wasted tons of our time.
