I don't know of any in Suzhou or Shanghai, but you might want to call the HK Satir Centre (details below) - they might be able to refer you to someone where you live. The HK Satir Centre provides family and couple counselling services in HK, and I am sure they will know of counsellors in your area. I hope this helps. All the best to you and your husband.

My partner and I are going to couples counselling here in HK. We are due to start next week. We choose our counsellor based on the following factors:

1. Where are they qualified? and when?

2. Number of years of experience in marriage / couples counselling

4. Their age - would you prefer someone your own age or someone older?

5. Both you and your partner should speak with the counsellor over the phone before your first meeting to make sure that you both feel comfortable.

I do some counselling as part of my job (not marriage or couples counselling) and luckily my partner has gone to counselling before, so both of us had some idea of what we wanted.

The first counsellor that the counselling service provided was a young mother who did not put either of us at ease - when we asked the above questions she came across as defensive and more interested what ever she was doing at the time, than in making us feel comfortable about her ability. Seemed like it was a part time hobby for her. Also she only had 1 year's experience and was relatively young - needless to say we did not end up choosing her. We called back the counselling service and asked for the backgrounds of the various counsellors and have now chosen one whom we are both much more comfortable with. We will go for our first session next week, so can report back later to let you know how it goes. I think that both you and your partner need to feel comfortable with the person who is helping you with your relationship issues.

Supermodel - Counselling does not provide the answer, but it does helps to open up communication and dialogue of the key issues / obstacles in the relationship. It also helps to discover deeper issues that you may or may not have been aware of. However, it's not the solution for every relationship problem.
