Discrimination with Indians?

Hi All,

I'm in HK for about a year now and I have noticed that the way HK locals talk to westerners is different than they talk to Indians. I work in IT and live at a decent place but still see people looking at me differently.

People at work also make me little uncomf. I'm not sure if that's the case with every one or I think too much..

there are 2 types here

those who have some international experience, living, working or studying abroad, they are more civilized and dont discriminate much

2nd types who think hong kong is the world and world is hong kong, they are they ones who act nasty, and i usually confront them... try that, you will have a good time seeing how they chicken out when confronted for their behaviour, and most of the time i found that they speak lousy English and their world only extends till mainland.

Thanks Scorpio for your reply.

I thought abt confronting them but then a thought passed that it would look rude. I have had bad experiences at stores, salon etc. even in the apartment building where I live I see gaurds quickly running and opening doors for chinese or westerners but not when I show up. I have never talked about this with anyone. This is all based on my observations.

your observation is correct, i never had issues with guards, its the more civilized looking types who misbehave.

earlier i also used to let it go, but i had enough and most of the time i do confront them, for me it works, at least they realize that they have no justification of their bad manners, often they just run away or apologize.

yes, even i would feel depressed, WTF man, I am educated and civilized, don't smell bad, try to be courteous, why the hell these suckers leave when i sit near them in metro or bus.

Once I had enough and stood in front of a gentleman who decided i wasn't good enough to sit near him, confronted him and i have never looked back, men and women, not a single one has yet managed to defend this behavior.

These people are the rudest people on earth! You have to show them that you aren't afraid or give a dam about their behavior. What I learnt is by being rude back to them and show them that they aren't better race than us. They often think I'm a Filipino helper coz of my skin colour and my sons don't look like me, even at international school some teachers and receptionist they are learn to be racist like Chinese too, they saw me came to pick up my son they asked" are you....helper? " I told them I'm not! Don't be so judgemental so any one had this colour skin has to be a helper? Then they apologize. I'm quite angry too.
Please don't afraid of hurting those pea brain people.

Im happy to hear other people are standing up to the discrimination and rude aspect of local HK behaviour. They continually complain about Mainlanders behaviour when in fact their local behaviour isn't much better.

How many times a day on the MTR do you hear - "Please let passengers exit before entering", and yet barge and charge they do as soon as the doors open. I feel sorry for people with children and baby strollers - I see this every day. Initially I use to duck and weave trying to get out but now I just walk straight out regardless of coming crowd even if Im carrying a bulky item.

And can someone please please tell me why it is impossible for them to walk in a straight line. Invariably, when trying to pass, they meander into you. Never ever fails.

And stop to text or take a call on busy MTR stairs and completely oblivious to the direction arrows the MTR has painstakingly installed to aid in congestion.

Been here 8 years and I do love this city but the rude behaviour is tiring.

In Indian cities, anyone looking Chinese are discriminated.. (many North Eastern Indian) discrimination of different forms exist across the globe. In HK its relatively moderate.. you will get used to it in another couple of years.. as russel peters said.. you run away from indians and chinese , but you cannot hide from 40% of global population
